After sharing his new film BlacKkKlansman on Monday night, acclaimed film director Spike Lee railed against Trump at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie centers on the true story of a black police officer who managed to crack open a branch of the KKK, and uses footage from the deadly Charlottesville, Virginia, rally that took place last August.
When discussing his decision to use the footage from the protest at the end of the film, Lee spoke for approximately five minutes, and took the opportunity to tear into President Trump's response to the deadly white nationalist event, where one woman, Heather Heyer, was killed.
"And we have a guy in the White House Im not gonna say his f***ing name who defined that moment not just for Americans but the world, and that motherf***er was given the chance to say we are about love, not hate," Lee said in a transcript published by Vulture. "And that motherf***er did not denounce the motherf***ing Klan, the alt-right, and those Nazis motherf***ers. It was a defining moment, and he could have said to the world, not just the United States, that we were better than that."
Lee went on to describe why he believed that the "so-called American cradle of democracy" was a false narrative. "The United States of America was built on the genocide of native people and slavery," Lee said. "That is the fabric of the United States of America."
Lee also pointed out that an increased rise in far-right politicians is not isolated to the United States, but is, in fact, happening around the world. "We cant be silent," Lee said. "Its not a black, white, or brown [problem], its everybody. We all live on this planet, and this guy in the White House has the nuclear code."
The director and producer also lamented the fact that, though political conflicts can feel intangible, the reality of the situation is that the president of the United States holds the nuclear codes. It is not impossible for him to make decisions that could result in tremendously serious violence.
"I go to bed thinking about it. Ive seen the 'football,' that attache case," lee said, referencing what is sometimes called the "nuclear football," which allows the president to authorize a nuclear attack while away from brick and mortar command centers. "My wife and I gave a benefit for President Obama in the second term, and I saw the attache case in the car. That is not science fiction, that s**t is real. And that motherf***er has the nuclear code!"
Lee plans to release the film on August 10, marking the one year anniversary of the Charlottesville rally. After the Cannes viewing, Lee and his film received a ten-minute long standing ovation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
He further described his film as "a wake up call."
"Stuff is happening," he said, "And its topsy-turvy and the fake has been trumpeted as the truth. Thats what this film is about. I know my heart, I dont care what the critics say or anybody else, but we are on the right side of history with this film."
After the Charlottesville rally, Trump infamously attributed the violence to both sides the neo-Nazis as well as the counter-protestors. "I think there is blame on both sides," Trump said. "You had a group on one side that was bad. You had a group on the other side that was also very violent. Nobody wants to say that. Ill say it right now." His comments resulted in members of his own political party demanding an apology, as well as outraged opponents from the other side of the aisle.
Nice use of the English language there Skip.
Such profanity!
The boy seems angry. I’d suggest psychiatric help. And learning how to speak in public without sounding like a teen in the hood.
Spike Lee: a filmmaker who has made his reputation by plumbing the bottomless shallows of “ripped-from-the-headlines hot-button “issues”. He’s the poor man’s Oliver Stone. And he doesn’t know the first thing about what actually happened at the Charlottesville rally, and how cynically staged it was.
Can sombody post the pimp frm I’m gonna get you Sucker with the fish bowl shoes
I think that about somes up Spike.
Spike Lee is just playing for the cameras. His parents paid $40,000 for their townhouse in Fort Greene back in 1968. My parents paid $20,000 for our home in Boston in 1970. We were solid middle class and Brooklyn had far cheaper neighborhoods with comparable prices to Boston. Fort Greene next to Brooklyn Heights as always been a fairly good neighborhood even during the 1970’s.
You touched on something there.
I think blacks who were born into a middle/upper class upbringing feel guilt about that, and they have a strong need to show the world that they are “down with the shtruggle”.
F spike lee
Why all the hate Spike??? America has made you wealthy and famous beyond anyones dreams. If you hate whitey so much return all the money whitey used to buy your products.
Racist ingrate.
They are so proud to be African but wouldn’t live there kind of like the proud south Americans no free lunches there.
This is what it boils down to: a hatred of the US from its very inception (as if every other country wasn't founded on violence, war, slavery, oppression, and the genocide of whoever had it before.) And if you insisted that Spike Lee -- or anyone like him -- find you a country with none of that, he wouldn't be able to, but it wouldn't change his attitude, and I think I have figured it out:
Some people actually enjoy the emotion of hatred. They are naturally destructive. They are the kids who kick down other kid's sandcastles, because it feels good. Some people like building something, but these types like tearing it down. And we do need both types. We need demolition to clear the way for new construction.
But we have to remember that these demolition types cannot be the decision makers, because they simply destroy whatever they come upon. They can't discriminate or judge accurately because their only real urge is to destroy, so they will always find reasons. But they are best kept on a short leash and managed by someone wiser than themselves.
The fact that Spike Lee even rates Cannes tells me all I need to know about that event.
The truth hurts, and Trump telling the truth sure is a wake up call to the liberal haters that they can keep lying however, we're on to their lies and hate speech.
They started as an organization to keep Republicans from voting.
Did he ever make movies?
Hey bro, the KKK is basically irrelevant. Didn’t you get the tweet?
Do the Right Thing is one of my top 10 movies of all time. (”Sal! How come you ain’t got no brothers on the wall?”). It would make a very good play, too (not a musical!). His other movies range from passable to (mostly) awful.
I don’t understand how he is still even making movies. When was the last time a movie of his even made a profit?
