They looked impressive at the start, but it soon became clear that the “popular front” had factions actually at odds with each other. Basque separatists lost enthusiasm when Franco quickly seized their territory; they weren’t adamant Bolsheviks (didn’t kill their clergy/outlaw the Church the way the rest of leftist Spain did), and their homeland was quickly “pacified”. Before a year had passed, the Bolsheviks murdered the leadership of the anarchists and forced their rank-and-file into other units. As the war dragged on, there was no more elation on the left; starvation set in, and workers who thought they’d been “liberated from work” realized what happens when NOBODY wants to work - it all fell apart. When Barcelona fell there was almost no resistance; three years after it started, the civil war fizzled to an end.
