Her description of Casey doesn’t make it sound at all like he was either poor or had no other options than the military. In fact, it sounds like he was getting a pretty good start to a civilian career—and then decided to enlist. In doing that, he made the choice countless other young people have made, and for similar reasons.
The military is not a career of last resort. People enter the military because it’s a calling. Some do enter for the wrong reasons, but they don’t make a career of it.
My mother is as loony and anti-military as Cindy Sheehan. Despite that, I had decided at the age of 11 that I wanted to grow up to be an Army officer. Decades later, as a newly minted PhD, my childhood dream came true. I could do better as a civilian—people with my education and experience can pull in 6 figure incomes—but I wanted to be in the Army. And I can’t say I’ve regretted it one bit.
Her son was a true war hero.
