Complete rubbish and it pisses me off every time I see someone make this argument. Every study I have seen clearly places the majority of our enlisted ranks coming from middle-class families. I served for 25-years as the son of a retired flag officer, and three of my 5 children are serving today. I didn't grow up "poor" and neither did my children, by any stretch of the imagination.
Moreover, a healthy percentage of our officer corps, as well as a sizable percentage of our enlistees come from prior-service families, who are far from destitute and indigent.
Contrary to what is frequently reported, our enlisted and commissioned service members are well-educated with a range of options available to them. The choose to serve their country, many times for just that reason - they WANT to serve their country.
I grieve for Ms. Sheehan's loss, as I grieve for all gold-star mothers. But, that doesn't make her any less of an idiot than she clearl is.

My father was a retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Commo Chief(E-7, WWII/Korea/Early Vietnam), both of my grandfathers were Army Privates in WWI and I enlisted in Army Intelligence of my own free will and served two tours in Korea in the 70’s and 80’s.
This woman is basically deranged. If she actually thinks her idea has an iota of merit, she should probably be locked up for her own protection.
She is oblivious to the forces of evil in this world and really thinks those that exist reside only in America. The land of the free and the home of the brave is actually the home of the depraved in her mind. She projects herself onto others all too well.
