Bush pushes ahead with immigration reform
Financial Times ^ | September 16, 2005 | Edward Alden

The White House has drawn up a comprehensive proposal to reform US immigration laws that would allow illegal immigrants already in the country to remain as legal guest workers, but would force them to leave after six years and re-apply to return. “They're further along than I thought,” said Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican who has been pushing for immigration reform.

The proposal was outlined to a small group of House Republicans this week in a meeting convened by Karl Rove, White House deputy chief of staff.

Mr Bush told Republican lawmakers at a private meeting in July that he wanted an immigration bill taken up this autumn, and he appears to be pressing ahead on that timetable despite the disruption caused by the hurricane.

In the House of Representatives, Republican speaker Dennis Hastert has directed his party to try to resolve sharp internal differences between those who favour increased legal immigration and those who want existing laws against illegal immigration enforced aggressively. Rep John Shadegg of Arizona is leading that effort.

The White House plan has three main pillars, including tougher enforcement along the borders, stiffer penalties for employers who hire illegal immigrants and the creation of a large temporary worker programme.

Write your senator and the president urging them to drop the worker program and agressively seek out those here illegally for deportation. This is amnesty by another name. I know some are programmed not to call this proposal amnesty, but amnesty it is.

This is amnesty by another name.

It sure is.

... would allow illegal immigrants already in the country to remain as legal guest workers...

What does Bush plan to do with the "illegal immgrants" who don't work?

Of course it's an amnesty. Bush has always been in favor of an amnesty--he just didn't want to call it that.

"The White House has drawn up a comprehensive proposal to reform US immigration laws that would allow illegal immigrants already in the country to remain as legal guest workers, but would force them to leave after six years and re-apply to return."

May as well save themselves the trouble. Any "proposal" that features leaving 20 million illegal aliens in this country is DOA.

It will go nowhere.

They elected him twice.
He's only (rightfully) forgotten about the unappeasables, malcontents and liberals.

Write your senator and the president urging them to drop the worker program and agressively seek out those here illegally for deportation.

I can deal with the first part. The second would be a waste of time if measures aren't taken to prevent illegal entry first. Deportation without border fortification is nothing more than a revolving door.

We also need to remove the desire to come here illegally. Those who hire illegal aliens should face stiff fines AND jail time. When they stop hiring the illegals won't be so willing to sneak in.

Hence, "legal guest workers".

Great plan to bring down those approval ratings ahead of the mid-term election...

Hillary and Bill must be ordering champagne right about now...

including tougher enforcement along the borders

That's pure BS!
Just more empty rhetoric!
Bush hasn't done anything in 5 years, why would he start now?

Hence, "legal guest workers".

Foreigners should be required to apply from within their home countries for a guest worker program. We shouldn't reward illegal alien lawbreakers by allowing them to apply for a guest worker program while they are illegally within the United States.

Tom DeLay, a late convert, said, "Before Congress takes any significant legislation, we must secure our nation's borders."

I guess the question here is whether Bush is going to try and push legislation through unaltered or is he going to present the legislation and allow congress to have at it?

The president isn't vulnerable on this or any other issue. After all he isn't seeking reelection but I suspect that congress is nervous and rightly so.

Hmm...let's play that game out, shall we?

I just want the law obeyed.

Who doesn't? Hence, "legal guest rapists".

I just want the law obeyed.

Who doesn't? Hence, "legal guest murderers".

I just want the law obeyed.

Who doesn't? Hence, "legal guest Robbers".

Wow...somehow the "law obeyed" part just seems to get lost in the translation...

Let's try this...

I just want the law obeyed, the BORDER secured, the CURRENT CROP of ILLEGAL INFILTRATORS expelled, and THEN we begin to allow some...SOME...legally entering workers in, in a controlled sustainable method where we document who they are, how long they will be here, their TAX NUMBER, where they are from, and if the have skills and are DISEASE FREE in that order...

Who doesn't?

Hence, "legal guest workers".

Gee, now is THAT SO DIFFICULT?!?!
