MANIFESTO OF THE WPPFF/WILD TURKEYS/COALITION OF THE SANE
Me. | 29MARCH05 | Long Cut

Posted on 03/29/2005 8:58:34 AM PST by Long Cut

We, the Witness Protection Program For Freepers, aka the Wild Turkeys, aka the Coalition of the Sane, have through mutual discussion and rigourous thought, determined that:

1. The discussion threads regarding Terri Schiavo (hereafter referred to as "TS") have become too full of innuendo, rumormongering, hyperbole, hysteria, namecalling, paranoia, and general poor behavior to warrant participation.

2. Said threads have degenerated into "echo chambers", wherein the same, common thoughts are continually posted again and again, and the same old disreputable, unconfirmed and/or false urban myths are propagated.

3. Anyone who joins in said theads with alternative viewpoints to the most extreme posts are routinely driven away with slander, accusations, and vile namecalling.

4. No data or evidence contrary to the "prevailing opinions" are accepted, considered, or discussed; and in fact are rejected outright in most instances.

5. That the continued calls for armed insurrection, military or paramilitary involvement, impeachements of politicians and judges, and death threats are embarassing, stupid, shortsighted, doomed to failure, and contrary to most if not all conservative thought prior to this case, as well as damaging in the extreme to FR and the conservative movement as a whole.

6. That such emotional, hyperbolic, and propaganda-driven hysteria is in fact contrary to all conservatives USED to stand for.

7. That the holding up of swastika and other Nazi imagery towards the police and the Bushes, the use of children as political props, and the disruption of the peace at the Woodside Hospice can only reflect badly on conservatives in general, and should be discouraged.

8. That the pursuit of this issue to the exclusion of all others by the GOP has damaged, perhaps beyond repair, the pursuit of other important issues as well as the reputation of the GOP, FR, and conservatism.

The WPPFF is NOT of one mind as to the case of TS or its correct outcome. In fact, wide disagreement exists within our little group. However, we are united in our wish that reason and sanity be respected in the discussion, as well as the rights of all parties involved or participating. We wish to discuss this as adults and intellectuals, as conservatives and as FRiends, not as children screaming past each other on some playground of hysteria. We wish for facts and evidence to be provided, discussed reasonably, and considered fairly.

We reject all accusations of Naziism, "death cultism", or other slander as methods of debate. We reject the practice of "spamming" multiple threads, of posting unending vanities, and the posting of propaganda and calls for violence. We reject, in fact, all unseemly and childish behavior which has come to characterize this case on FR.

We DO invite others to come and reasonably discuss the issue. We have no problem with FReepers who wish to debate in a rational and fair manner, and with due respect for their fellow FReepers. We have NO problem with those whose views are formed by religion; however we reject "preaching" or "being beaten with a Bible" as legitemite debate tactics. Not all of us are Believers, and such tactics only cheapen the source.

If a FReeper finds this an acceptable meansd to discuss this and other issues, they are welcome to join in and participate. Those who find pleasure in attacks, flame-baiting, slander, stalking, and personal atacks will be ignored, and their egos will go unfed.

We assume this thread to be a zone of sanity in an overheated atmosphere. Thus, a general amnesty is in effect. If posters conduct themselves within the guidlines above, we will be happy to discuss and debate with you. If a poster wishes to apologize for past slips of the tongue, or for possible "over-the-top" statements to another, it will be graciously accepted, and your company welcome.

Please bring a sense of humor; we feel that too many have been taking themselves too seriously lately.

Let the discussion begin!

Signed,

The WPPFF, aka The Wild Turkeys, aka the Coalition of the Sane.

Terry Pratchett - I'll check next time I'm at the library. And I never did think that Harry Potter books were witchcraft manuals!

Thank you for sharing that. A dose of perspective is always good. (And, of course, I'm sorry for your family's loss)

My brother is battling blood cancer himself, and he's terribly frustrated with his doctors at Sloan-Kettering. I guess it's rubbing off on the whole family.

And the president can forget getting his judges nominates, imo.

I'm signing off for the night but want to go on record as diagreeing with this. I think the Senate is going to make it happen.

I do.

I understand the reasoning in saying that it won't, but I don't think so. I think the American people can separate out the issues and dems will be too ham-handed.

We'll see.

On that optimisitc note, I'll say good night.

Thank you for your condolences...

Sorry to hear about your brother...when one is battling cancer, frustration and anger, fear and sadness, which come from the diagnosis and the treatment, can often appear , disappear and reappear mixed in with happiness at remission...its an up and down roller coaster, which leaves families, often frazzled...and yet families trudge on, what else can they do?...

Cancer wreaks havoc on families, that is for sure...

Poohbah makes a good case that the lawyers that the parasites provided deliberately threw the case. Pooh?

I know you have retired, but that theory sounds tin foil to me. I did read a theory that the lawyer deliberately was loathe to use the substantive due process argument, because that is beyond the pale for the religious right, and Scalia types and lots of other types. That contention strikes me as lacking elegance. The more elegant explanation, is that with the press of time, the lawyer just F'ed up, and hadn't planned ahead adequately. The use of the word "parasites" is unnecessary in my view also.

Suggested thought process of who wrote the above.

No ideas, no useful diaglog, no solutions = Democrats?

"The thread itself is an invitation to a food fight,"

Seems to me it's an invitation for discussion.

Whether it's a fight or argument or something useful is up to the reader. Where do you stand?

on CNN breaking news that the Schindlers have filed a petition en banc to the 11th and it was accepted, they will review the petition (all 12 judges),

Just as a memory check, it seems that I keep hearing that Michael refused to let Terri have swallowing tests. Yet, in the Wolfson report, I read that there were three early on - 1991, 1992, and 1993. Now, that should be in the medical records, so if Wolfson was making stuff up, it could be checked.

Let's see ... over and over, claims by the Schindler crowd have proven to be false... Occam's Razor tells me that the swallowing test stuff is probably not an error or coverup in the Wolfson Report.

Odd they waited an extra three days, or whatever. I assume this is the petition they chose not to file after the 3 judge panel rejected the second appeal on the ruling based on the amended complaint. Insane really.

Very.

Could it be about their claim that she is being denied communion?

No. :) And I am just assuming what I said, based on what I recall. It seems to be some play for more publicity. It seems highly unlikely that Terri will be alive to "see" what the en banc court does. What are the odds that the en banc court will reverse the 3 judge panel, knowing that their reversal ruling will be moot, and just enrage the public square some more? Close to absolute zero is my guess.

It's to reinsert; they are claiming the 11th erred, according to MSNBC.

Parents saying they need to look at de novo? That's what Dan Abrams is saying on MSNBC. Abrams says the 11th is saying they deserve to be heard? Why didn't they address this before?

Makes no sense to me. The play before was about granting an injucntion, or an All Writs order keeping the case from becoming moot. Denial was based on the finding that the Schlinders didn't have a viable federal claim, in essence. Maybe the en banc court thinks there is a viable substantive due process claim (inserted in the amended complaint). If so, and what I thought I read 3 days ago that Gibbs was not going to ask for an en back review, then we are in Shakespearean tragedy territory. I guess our speculation is just wasting bandwidth. I hope my take is wrong. Indeed if I were not a confirmed near atheist, I would frame it that I "pray" that I am wrong.

BTW, I wonder how many people here on Free Republic were more liberal when they were younger and more foolish. I certainly was not as conservative as I am now!

MY parents were democrats, an just loved Jimmy Carter. I had an uncle who defected to Cuba, and used to send us all kinds of socialist crap. Then along came Reagan, and I became a Reaganite in my early teens...

If Reagan hadn't come along back then, I probably would have been a liberal for a bit there... I guess I just got lucky ;0)

It is perhaps inevitable that some will try to trash this thread and start flamewars here to get it pulled. My advice is to simply ignore such posts, unless one responds with a paragraph or passage from the Manifesto ONLY.

Main Entry: meg·a·lo·ma·nia
Pronunciation: "meg-&-lO-'mA-nE-&, -ny&
Function: noun
