Roman Gabriel, a former NC State star from the 1960s, passed away Saturday at 83-years-old. Gabriel was an inaugural member of the NC State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012, and he was inducted into the College Football HOF in 1989.

Gabriel delivered back-to-back ACC Player of the Year awards during his time with the Wolfpack in 1960 and 1961. While at NC State, he set 22 total school records and 9 ACC records while becoming the first ACC quarterback with over 1,000 passing yards in a season.

Gabriel was a 2-time All-American and became a top-5 pick in both the AFL and NFL drafts. He was the No. 1 pick in the AFL draft and the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft before playing 16 seasons in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles.

*From those eras, who would be better?*

I’d say Stabler, Namath, Staubach. Both Stabler and Staubach replaced good qb’s that didn’t have the it factor(Lamonica/Merideth). Namath had great form. Bradshaw only had to not screw up like McMahon for the Bears in ‘85.

I remember back in the day it was rumored he was gay? Anyone remember that? And does anyone know for sure one way or the other?

He is the first Eagles QB that I remember, back when I was growing up in Joisey. RIP.

One of the strongest arms ever. Could throw perfect spiral length of field.

IMVHO Excluding Unitas as too early-

I’d go with Tarkenton and Fouts.

They both excelled in 4Q comebacks which implies less game planning and more on the QB’s shoulders.

I agree, just listened to some Dickie Betts. And to those who came here on the day a great man died just to crap all over him, I say Free Repub makes me scratch my head some times...who are these people?

From those eras, who would be better? Bart Starr?! Hadl? Namath? Bradshaw? QBs couldn’t win by themselves in those days.

Yes, it was not the pass-first era we are in now. Stouter defenses and strong ground games dominated. Gabriel's Rams team were good, they just happened to be in the same era when the Packers dominated.

Tarkenton almost brought the Vikes back after the drew Pearson push off.
Got right down to the goal line and couldn’t get it in

I heard him months ago on a 30 minute radio info commercial with other football players about a pain killing program.

I would add Unitas. I forgot about him. He was better than Gabriel.

Fouts was after Tark’s prime, Unitas and Gabriel were contemporaries. Jim Hart was not bad either. Notice a lot of really good qbs didn’t necessarily win championships.

Unitas was 60’s. Ended up broke.

Same with baseball-DH. More offense sells. Powers that be don’t care about the game.

Basketball: The ‘carry’ the ball when dribbling unlike the 70’s.
