Mom and four teenage girls renting an eerie Airbnb in rural Kentucky reveal why they left early after 'unsettling' discovery

A family fled the Airbnb they were renting in rural Kentucky after making several startling observations about the house.

The family, which consisted of the renter, Laura Schilling, her mother, and four teenage girls, were visiting Lexington the weekend of April 13 for one of the girls' equine competition.

They were from outside the state, so they booked an Airbnb for the duration of their stay.

They landed in Kentucky late on Thursday night, and were alarmed to find the front door wide open. In a Facebook post that chronicled her harrowing stay, Schilling wrote: 'I went in knowing that it was the right home based on pictures, but was very leery that there could be someone in the house.'

She checked under all of the beds and inside the closets. Only after Schilling made sure that the house was clear did she let her daughter and her daughter's friends enter the house.

Then she made sure that all of the windows and doors were 'closed and locked.'

The next day, April 13, they left the house, and when they returned, they found 'that someone had been in the home.'

Schilling explained that they were certain someone had entered the property because 'the deadbolt was unlocked and the hotel style latch was now open.'

They assumed that the Airbnb owner had dropped by the house and ignored it.

Later that same day, they went to dinner and then returned to the Airbnb, where they hung out and then got ready for bed around 11:30pm.

It was late, and it was dark outside. Schilling, her mother, and the four teenagers were ready to go to sleep.

But then one of the girls burst into the Schilling's room.

As an old boomer, there are at least 2 things I will never do; let a stranger deliver cooked food and stay in some stranger’s house. To me they are both crazy.

Decades ago on my earliest trips to England I visited many little towns and stayed in houses that had handmade cardboard B&B signs posted on the front gate. I would never stay in an Airbnb in modern times - and that includes England too!

I just returned to my home town and stayed in an air BNB in a neighborhood I knew. It was great.

They were probably Louisville fans and they deserved worse than what they got.

I have read somewhere that there are neighborhoods where people get really pissed off that a homeowner has turned a house into a airbnb.

Since nothing was taken and nobody hurt, it could be people around there trying to scare away visitors and make it where nobody wants to stay there.

This is going to become more prevalent.

AirB&B is the perferct business for pervy voyeur types.

I suppose hotels could have the same issues but the number of staff increase the risk of getting caught.

The indians called Kentucky that “dark and bloody ground” for a reason, which is why they never rented Airbnbs there.

You can get wifi, or 5g if no wifi is available, to transmit to your phone.
The cheap ones just take pics to an SD card.
They only record when movement is detected. I have several on my acreage, and one for travel.

I find it very creepy and something people should be on the lookout for when renting,

My wife and I use Airbnb fairly regularly. Its sometimes cheaper than hotels, and also closer to particular places we want to be. I find the reviews and ratings of renters and their properties are quite useful. It also has methods for dispute and refunds, although I've never had to use them. It works the other way too. We, as guests, are also rated.

Its not a 100% perfect system, but I like how its a very successful community that sprung up completely on the idea of free-exchange.

Hidden cameras were my first guess and bet there were several in the bedrooms and baths. Too many sickos out there.

Doors falling off planes. Morons self identifying as speed bumps. Violent protests every other day. Gas prices going to skyrocket this summer. Bumper to bumper traffic out in the boonies. Tried to drop off a donation at Goodwill a few days ago only to have an illegal stand at my vehicle just staring at me. No thanks, I’ll just stay close to home with those I trust.
