DRAMATIC footage captured the moment Ukraine "shot down" a Russian Tu-22M3 nuke bomber sending it spiralling to the ground.

The £228million aircraft was part of Vladimir Putin’s nuclear strike force - and the downing is seen as a major blow to the dictator.

It crashed over the Stavropol region - some 250 miles from the border - in southern Russia after completing a bombing attack on Ukraine.

The long-range strategic bomber was shot down by a S-200 anti-aircraft missile system, said Channel 2, citing sources in Ukraine's GUR military intelligence agency.

The GUR said: “As a result of the damage, the bomber was able to fly to the Stavropol region, where it fell and crashed.

“It should be noted that this is the first successful destruction of a strategic bomber in the air during combat during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

leaves several questions open - among them, what was such an aircraft, designed for launching very long range standoff weapons, doing so close to Ukraine?

I thought the cruise missile launch areas for these bombers where the Caspian Sea area

What would a nuclear-equipped plane have been doing so close to Ukrainian airspace?

Also, this type of plane is routinely used in conventional attacks vs Ukraine. Its disingenuous to blame Ukraine for shooting at these things if Russia is happy to mix and match their roles.

Exactly so. The Caspian is out of range of anyones SAM systems. But this one went down near Stavropol, which is far from the Caspian sea.

Warmongering Russians just can’t stop genocidally attacking their neighbors. A true barbarian horde if there ever was one.

The launch line for the Tu-22 that was shot down was over the Black Sea off Crimea.

In fact, Russia sent two Tu-22’s last night to the Crimea launch line for the attack.

After Ukraine shot down the first bomber, the second bomber aborted its mission and returned to base.

If Putin still had a Black Sea Fleet, he wouldn’t have to send his strategic bombers to Crimea launch lines.

X-22/KH-22 missiles. In fact, Ukraine shot them down for the first time last night. So Ukraine shot down the bomber as well as the X-22’s it launched. Ukraine hasn’t been able to shoot down X-22s until last night. So I assume new air defense was provided to Ukraine to protect Odesa.

The second Tu-22 wasn’t able to launch its X-22’s since it turned tail and ran after the first one was shot down.

It’s called testing. Now they know there is a weakness to fix. Whatever the cost. This is how we find out. Israel, US, and now Iran just found out stuff recently. Next time, more can be killed, hurray!

Khrushchev being raised (partially) in the Ukraine does not make him Ukrainian. The operative description for him is atheist, communist, and Moscow-seated dictator.

“… Ukrainian all the way…”

He wasn’t born in Ukraine, he didn’t retire to Ukraine, he didn’t die in Ukraine, and he didn’t have a Ukrainian name.
