I’m a Bank Teller: 3 Times You Should Never Ask For $100 Bills at the Bank
Yahoo News ^ | 04/03/2024 | Andrew Lisa

~snip~

As part of a longstanding campaign to stop printing and even recall existing $100 bills, the New Republic wrote, “Benjamins are the favorite currency of criminals and almost no one else.”

Rich tax evaders, corrupt foreign officials, money launderers, counterfeiters and other bad actors hoard them, but the law-abiding masses rarely use them except for overseas travel or special occasions.

As far back as 1976, an economist named James Henry called for an end to the $100 bill in an article in The Washington Monthly because — even nearly a half-century ago — it was the preferred currency of organized crime and tax evaders almost exclusively. In 1945, the Treasury stopped printing $500 and $1,000 bills; and, in 1969, it recalled all remaining $1,000 bills, $5,000 bills and $10,000 bills because of their overwhelming prevalence in money laundering.

That leaves just the mighty C-Note at the top of the hill.

In short, there’s no bill quite like the Benjamin, and asking a bank for one isn’t like asking for any other denomination. Here’s when to avoid doing so.

My check is direct deposit. When I go shop for incidentals, I use cash. I take $400. every week. The bank always gives me $100 dollar bills. Once in a while I’ll get 2- 50’s. It’s like they want to get rid of them.

Depending on what I need the cash for I get 100s.

Not for use in small business that don’t carry much cash.

The article is this rap about how mostly criminals and tax evaders use them... then goes into detail about how you can get them.

Ask the teller to verify the validity of each bill she/he hands over.

The reporting requirement has been in effect since 1970. Per wiki =>

“The Bank Secrecy Act of 1970 (BSA) ~snip~ Specifically, the act requires financial institutions to keep records of cash purchases of negotiable instruments, file reports if the daily aggregate exceeds $10,000, and report suspicious activity that may signify money laundering, tax evasion, or other criminal activities.[2]

So the $10,000 today would have been about $1,200 in 1970.

$100 bills are a great birthday present for grandchildren. I hand them out all the time.

The $100 bill is the new twenty. Time to start printing $500 and $1000 bills again.

You nailed it. $20's don't buy a thing.

That had nothing to do with a Treasury report. The account holder never sees those. They are never informed about them.

I managed banks. I know about this stuff.

That is a bank liability policy. It is because people pay money to fraudsters and get clubbed over the head when they walk out of the bank with a lot of cash.

I used to cash my checks at the bank they were drawn on and they would give me 60+ of them at a time and I never requested them, but was glad to get them as they’re much easier to put in your pocket and walk out.

This is nonsense. If your bank can’t give you hundreds when you want them, probably time to change banks

Never ever had a problem getting 100s from a bank. Oh at peak hours?!? Really let’s make the teller count out even more bills of smaller denominations that will be “faster” for them.

What nonsense

Don’t ask for 20s either. When I worked in a store, I’d have people saying they gave me a 20 when they gave me a 10. Then there was a parking lot attendant who always told people who gave him a 20 that they had given him a 10. By this point, though prices have gone up so high maybe it’s 20s you shouldn’t be taking either.

BOTH ARE TAGGED.

Friend of mine always holds a Super bowl party.

He has “POOLS” on boards for everything you think of. LOTS of squares.

He took $300 into the bank he has done business with for OVER 15 years & asked for $5 bills-—because there are so many pools/squares & they each pay off $5.

THE BANK TELLER-—WHO KNEW HIM had to fill out paperwork:

Showing the INTAKE OF $300 from him & the payout of $5 bills to him.

Chase Bank-—Burbank, Calif.

HE was PISSED.
