How sustainable is wind power?
DW.com ^ | 12/21/21 | Gero Rueter

Wind power is essential to fighting climate change, yet building the turbines is energy-intensive and the blades are made from plastics. So how eco-friendly is wind power really?ind power is set to become the key pillar of the global renewable energy supply.

Generating power from wind is not only carbon neutral, it can also be used to produce hydrogen and synthetic fuels like kerosene and diesel in a climate-friendly way.

With the sun, wind is so abundant that it has the potential to supply the entire global energy demand a few times over. This will be vital for the energy transition.

But what about the negatives? How much of a wind turbine can be recycled? And what about the impact on species, and especially bird life? What is the lifetime carbon footprint of wind power?

Wind power is essential to fighting climate change

First line in the article tells you it's from someone who doesn't think clearly.

The climate is always changing!! The Modern Warm Period is not unprecedented. Counting since the days of Moses we're in the 4th warming period.

Take away the subsidies and we’ll find out. Ten years ago wind was virtually self-sustaining without subsidies but who doesn’t like free money when you can get it? And it made politicans feel real virtuous to be giving it away, so the subsidies stayed.

Try not to stand under them if it’s windy out....

https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=7479081811d2e948&q=wind+turbine+blade+broken&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwie_rqete-EAxWVjYkEHeF-BYsQ0pQJegQIDRAB&biw=1196&bih=548&dpr=1.33

And some don’t get enough wind during lulls.
The most common reason that turbines stop spinning is because the wind is not blowing fast enough. Most wind turbines need a sustained wind speed of 9 MPH or higher to operate.

Wind]d power was not suitable nor sustainable for a recent Texas winter.

Wind power is essential to fighting climate change...’
Wow, a lie in the first eight words. Actually - kind of two lies - wind fails and clueless gubmit paid idiots playing energy games both are ...let’s say....misinformation.

Here in Osage Co. we have Wind Farms...They are a blight on the county.

Do you all know...they have some exemption...that they can kill Bald Eagles, our National Bird,,???????

They kill thousands of birds and bat's..and insects.....It's disgusting....and a losing proposition. All in the name of "GREEN".....I say B.S.

What a rah! rah! cheerleader article. Yet it NEVER answers the question it posed: “How sustainable is wind power?”

It provides numbers purporting to show how wind kills far less wildlife than farms which seems preposterous.

It never addresses the real issue: Intermittency and Unreliability of weather to generate power, how you need 100% backup (you have to build TWO power plants where only ONE did the job before), the huge capital waste of building TWO power plants, and how unreliable sources can destabilize the grid and lead to grid collapse once you get above 30% renewables.

Stopped reading there, too.

They never mention the 1,600 scientists who say there’s no such thing as “climate change.”

"Wind power is essential to fighting climate change"

No foundation for that statement.

"building the turbines is energy-intensive"

True, and the energy used for building the turbines is not "CO2 neutral".

"and the blades are made from plastics",

and again that is not "CO2 neutral" as the plastics are made from "fossil fuels"

"So how eco-friendly is wind power really?"

They're not.

"Wind power is set to become the key pillar of the global renewable energy supply.

Another statement without foundation.

Generating power from wind is not only carbon neutral

It's NOT "carbon neutral"

With the sun, wind is so abundant that it has the potential to supply the entire global energy demand a few times over.

The science of energy refutes that notion.

This will be vital for the energy transition.

THAT assumes one is necessary, which is still not proven.

Can wind power even produce enough energy to build new windmills? It seems to me no power source can be self-sustaining if it can’t produce enough energy to support its replication.
