California Highway Patrol Santa Cruz is investigating a crash that occurred on Highway 9 in Felton.
Four bicyclists were hit by a vehicle and major injuries were reported, per CHP. CHP told KSBW that the crash occurred around 6:21 p.m. on Highway 9 at Glengarry Road.
An 85-year-old woman was driving a blue Kia Forte going north on Highway 9 while four bicyclists were going south on the east shoulder of the highway. CHP said that for an unknown reason, the Kia went off the roadway and hit the bicyclists.
The Kia continued going east and stopped after hitting a tree. The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, said CHP.
Two of the bicyclists suffered major injuries and were taken to the hospital via air ambulance. The other two bicyclists were also injured and taken to the hospital by ambulance.
The cause of the crash is being investigated and at this time drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.

This is why i mainly ride gravel. Way fewer vehicles and the scenery here in Texas is much better. Of course you have the occasional cowboy pull up and ask “YA’LL LOST?”
Bicyclists heading south on the east side of the highway. wouldn’t that be riding against traffic. Dangerous thing to do. That would be against the law in my State.
6:21? That’s sunset, could’ve been blinded by the sun coming around a curve. My daily commute is East in the morning, and west in the evenings. I try to organize my work so I avoid the sun. I’m nearly 70, and I don’t drive in the dark if I can avoid it.
Had I not been on an ROTC scholarship, I very likely would have stayed with the California Division of Forestry.

Of course, this is the MSM, who can’t be counted on to know East from West, or their left from their right, so who knows?

The South direction shoulder is on the West.

Riding shotgun, there were turns where I could almost reach out and touch the hillside. 85 YO drivers and Highway 9 are a bad mix. Throw in bicyclists at sundown, tha makes it much worse.
I remember a steady diet of venison, drivers were always hitting deer.
I’m just dyslexic enough that I’ll just agree with you, Fin. Lived in Santa Clara County for 20 years. Sure there are all kinds of bikes on that hazardous road, but there shouldn’t be; it’s too unsafe

I’m familiar with that stretch of road, as I used to ride my motorcycle through there quite a bit back in the 80s.
