The U.S Coast Guard is adapting to a workforce shortage by making operational adjustments, aiming to preserve its capacity to fulfill critical missions. The agency has 10 percent fewer enlisted personnel than needed, and it has acknowledged that it cannot continue to operate as before with fewer people. Rather than attempt to run all its vessels shorthanded, it will be idling some of its cutters and transferring crew to fully man the remaining active vessels.
“We cannot do the same with less. Conducting our missions is often inherently dangerous, and doing so without enough crew puts our members and the American public at increased risk,” said Adm. Linda Fagan, U.S. Coast Guard Commandant.

I saw one spectulation that these recruitment issues are artificially created so our military has the excuse to recruit lots of new undocumented immigrants into our military.
A friend’s son in law just re-up’d in the army, with the promise that he’ll be a recruiter 2 hours from his family. He has been sitting at a console in Poland, doing some high tech job. I’m thinking he’s jumping from the pan to the fire. I’m sure there are honest recruiters, but I’m guessing when they’re up against a shortage, such as now, they’re expected to turn into the worst type of used car salesman.

Maybe Biden should bring over a million or so Palestinians (who are all peaceful) to handle those jobs. Give them armed Coastguard Cutters and have them safeguard our shores.

The son of a friend of mine joined the Army, with a promise that he’d go into electronics. That made sense, as he was always interested in electrical stuff.
Well, the Army put him in electronics all right. The last I heard, he was carrying communication equipment in an infantry unit.
The young men that traditionally serve our nation in the military don’t want anything to do with Biden’s military. I figure that many families where these young men come from hear Dad talking about how eff’d up and woke our military leadership had become. Add to that, no one really wants to lose. Our military had proven over and over again that they lose wars.

In the later stages of the Roman Empire, the Roman Army could no longer count on Italians and, later on, provincials to provide men. So they used barbarians from outside the Empire. Yep. My cousin joined the Army with the written promise that she’d get to travel. They stuck her in a typing pool in New Jersey. She was having none of that. She was relentless, and they had to give her an honorable discharge. Her brother joined the Air Force. He specifically told them he wanted to work on jets in a very cold climate. They sent him to Arkansas, where he scraped off paint with hazardous chemicals for his entire tour.
When he finishes up and is studying it’s time to join the Air Guard or Reserve. They will give him real electronics to work with. We need to resume conscription.

There’s very little chance of that happening. His recruiter lied to him, and he is bitter about the military. That’s bad for the Army, and perhaps also bad for him.
Yeah, they’re stingy like that.
