Dog Behavioral issue.... Advice sought.
7/10/2023 | By Laz A. Mataz

My dog has a behavioral issue, and gets loose from time to time and kills cats... two so far. This is something that is making neighbors angry, obviously. Clearly the dog cannot stay here.

She is also perhaps the stupidest dog I have ever owned and is completely untrainable. We have successfully housebroken her. However, for the eating ritual, she WAS sitting when commanded, and began eating on the release command 'Okay', but she forgot half that training and now just stares at you when you release her.

Obviously we would never be able to train her not to kill cats.

I want to exhaust every option before I put her down. Is such a dog someone I want to give up to a shelter / rescue? Or is it best to just put her down?

We have a dog that a trainer told us was untrainable. His stupidity is confined to less annoying behaviors than killing neighbors’ cats, though. Not sure of a solution for you, but I do know that some dogs just don’t learn.

Your dog is likely a terrier breed. Terrier breeds were created to go after orey, so their prey drive is not always controllable.

I can only recommend a to run a line across the yard and tie your dog to it so it has a lot of room to roam the yard without being able to get out.

Someone rural with tons of property might take in the dog.
Is it a pit?

Dog needs to be rehomed in an environment where it can’t get out and kill neighbors’ cats. If it harmed mine, it would not be alive. Just another reason to keep ones’ cats indoors.

Get a physical fence or an electronic fence. If you take the dog for a walk, do it only on leash, no exceptions.

Take it to the dog whisperer- if he can’t fix the problem, noone can. If you can’t take it there, I wonder if there is a forum of his where it can be asked if it’s possible to train dog not to do that? Or maybe an internet search for “Train dog not to kill cats” might have some advice?

We had a Sheppard once that turned ugly and wouod kill other dogs. It was given to a junk yard in the end I beleive. Maybe that might be an option?

Surely, you have tried reasoning with it?
Perhaps bribe it with a game of Midnight Fetch! I’m told something like that worked in the inner cities, years ago.

Some dogs are not worth saving. Take the dog hunting and come home alone.

Don’t do the electric fence. I saw a show on a dog that was startled and it went through the electric fence. However, everytime it tried to return it would get a shock. It ended up dying on the street because it couldnt get home.

She’s a pitsky. Half husky, half pit. She was neglected as a puppy and has poor socialization, but she is as sweet as can be and since she grew up with a brother she’s also good with dogs.

Breed? Age? If otherwise of good temperament, do you have the option of creating a secure fenced area? Otherwise, can you try to re-home her or find a no-kill shelter that can take her.

Lots of options to explore before putting down a dog. You’ll never find a more loyal companion, and they deserve a better fate.

If someone is unlucky enough to adopt this dog from a shelter, it will just kill more cats at it's next home. Put it down.

I had a black lab that my young son asked me “Can dogs be retarded?”

Dumb as a rock and untrainable.

How old is she? How much physical exercise does she get? How much mental exercise does she get? Have you had her her whole life (was she adopted?)? How many people are with her? Is it just you that trains, feeds, exercises her?
Usually (dog dependent), when “weird” things like this happen, go back to square one with the training. Be patient. That’s why I asked how old she is. If she is young, less than three, they will go through phases of “forgetting” everything they have learned.
Unfortunately, once they taste blood or kill their pray, this is difficult, but not impossible, to overcome. I’m not sure what you mean by she got away or loose and kills cats. I would make sure she is ALWAYS on a good leash when outside. If she is getting loose when you open a door (we call it door dashing), then have her on a leash inside anytime you go near the door or open it.
There are so many variables to what may be happening to make a precise judgment on what is happening, that is why I have written so much but not enough. Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me if you have more to ask.
