'Thin-armoured' French tanks impractical for attacks, says Ukraine commander
France 24 ^ | July 2, 2023 | Staff

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked French leader Emmanuel Macron for sending light combat tanks to Kyiv, and Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov was filmed riding in one.

But a Ukrainian commander says the highly mobile AMX-10 RC infantry fighting vehicles -- sometimes described as light tanks -- are "impractical" for front-line attacks, claiming one four-man crew has already died because of the vehicle's thin armour.

23mm is less than an inch by my calculations.

Can’t see how that would stop AP rounds above 50 cal.

Send them back to France. Word has it they can use them locally right now.

Not a tanker, but I’d be reluctant to take anything other than a track mounted machine to the front lines anyway.

Not a tanker, or military, either but it looks like going up against a real Russian tank in that thing isn't a good idea.

Russian T-14 Armata

Mass: 55 tonnes
Main armament: smoothbore cannon with 45 rounds (of which, 32 in the autoloader).
Secondary armament: 12.7mm (1⁄2 in) Kord machine gun (6P49), 7.62mm (0.30 in) PKTM machine gun (6P7К)

And one hell of a reverse gear.

Also, probably comes with an auto deployed white flag with optional rainbow colored lighting.

Exactly, who would ever think of using a light tank as a front line breach tank, that’s what MBTs are for.

APCs are good against light infantry and for protecting passengers against artillery fragments.

They are death traps against real tanks or troops with anti-tank weapons.

AAMX-10 wasn’t designed to protect Europe from a Soviet attack. It was designed to protect French interests in Africa from insurgencies.

I've seen a couple articles that say all that has been seen to date are a few dozen prototypes totaling 40. That count was around 2021. Apperantly there have been a lot problems with it.

This is Russian propaganda.

There is simply no way that this is possible. These tanks are shifting the momentum and driving back Russians who are running away screaming like little girls.

These tanks are on their way to Moscow as I type.

I read that Zelensky is atop the lead one, doing his best to look a conquering hero, medals and all, with his head cocked and chest out.

Where did you get that idea? From World War I? Or from World War II where they inflicted nearly 50,000 German casualties in the six week or before the British fled the battlefield?

Where did you get that idea?

It's a running joke about French military prowess--deserved or not--sorry if you were offended.

Great for subjugating the unarmed and/or outgunned, though. Probably of more use in metropolitan France than Ukraine this Summer, but it's the thought that counts.

A full field test would have required the requisite large white flag to be flown on the vehicle...
