They were stopped near the circus and an elephant was by their car and it had been trained to put his/her foot on something red.

Elephants are colorblind!

They can see the hues blue and yellow, but they are unable to distinguish between red and green.

I saw a Wienermobile (there are six) at Picture Rocks, AZ last year. Went home and got my wife, but it was gone when we returned.

One of my roommates drove the Weinermobile when he work for Oscar-Meyer. He said it wasn’t the great experience that you would think, especially in windy conditions.

Knew Phil for decades. I worked at MBARI and set up the machine shop that housed Phil in the old wood building. We had day old bread (toast) and peanut butter with coffee early. We had a saltwater tank for MBA’s use to hold samples.
Phil used to sneak in and get water instead of buying sea salt for his bug tanks.

Staying in my shell might be a good thing. I have pretty thin skin...

Thank you. That is interesting. It seems that they can see red, they just don’t like it and they can’t tell the difference between red and green.

According to the internet, if one can believe what’s on the net:

“Explaining the dislike of elephants for these two colours white and red, Mishra said a study conducted all over India has shown that elephants have spotted and targeted person wearing red or white shirt or trousers or both in the mob more than person wearing other colour shirts/ trousers.”

That's about as definitive an observation as stating that "drivers wearing brown or black shoes or gold wristwatches - or both! - are (statistically) more likely to be involved in multi-vehicle car accidents than people wearing other-colored shoes or other-colored wristwatches."

I am esp. suspicious of that "in the mob" part: When an elephant attacks a mob, how are you going to find out which individual the elephant had singled out?
