They were stopped near the circus and an elephant was by their car and it had been trained to put his/her foot on something red.

Elephants are colorblind!

They can see the hues blue and yellow, but they are unable to distinguish between red and green.

Thank you. That is interesting. It seems that they can see red, they just don’t like it and they can’t tell the difference between red and green.

According to the internet, if one can believe what’s on the net:

“Explaining the dislike of elephants for these two colours white and red, Mishra said a study conducted all over India has shown that elephants have spotted and targeted person wearing red or white shirt or trousers or both in the mob more than person wearing other colour shirts/ trousers.”
