I live along the Columbia river and the eco-idiots have screwed it up for decades to save salmon and steelhead.
First, salmon and steelhead swim up stream to lay eggs.
Problem: Lamprey predators eat the eggs.
Solution: introduce new predators, northern pike minnow, to eat existing Lamprey.
New predators decimate their food source and now eat eggs. Also native tribes claim Lamprey are historically cultural food source.
Revised solution; pay fisherman to to catch northern pike minnows.
Marine mammal act: protect seals and sea lions
Problem: seals and sea lions eat salmon and steelhead entering the river and now live by the thousands at the mouth of the Columbia.
New problem; balancing the protection of seals and sea lions with the lives of salmon and steelhead.
Cause of all problems; white men.
Solution: tear down the dams and reduce fishing.
Interesting story. It just escalates and keeps getting worse.
