University drops English literature course 'because graduates struggle to get highly paid jobs'
Daily Telegraph ^ | 6/26/22 | Claudia Rowan

A university has suspended its English literature course, after a Government crackdown on perceived "low value" degrees.

Sheffield Hallam University said that the core humanities subject is among the courses that will be suspended for the 2023/24 academic year, but did not clarify the reason behind the decision or say how long the suspension would last.

Dr Mary Peace, an English literature lecturer at the university, told The Telegraph that staff were informed of the decision five minutes before a departmental away day.

She said that she believes the rationale behind the decision was “largely economic”, and suggested that the decision was made over a poor job return for graduates amid expectations of students being in a “highly-skilled” job within six months.

Is it really English literature, or Marxist studies in disguise?

Employers these days prefer people who take Angry Lesbian Acrobat Studies over people who can read.

I think you've put your finger on the problem.

The course alone may not be bad. What needs to be eliminated are most of the humanities degrees.

It’s in the UK. But the same concept can apply to American colleges and universities. Many college degrees do not lead to high level jobs and careers.

No one studies “Womyn’s Studies”, “Black History” and 300 other “courses” to get highly paid jobs, either. They all need to go away.

A friend is an english professor at a local community college.

Someone needs to teach them English, because many of these kids/young adults seem to have never learned it in their previous 12 years of public schooling. Their essays are awful. They can’t show that to an employer who is offering a career, or they wouldn’t stand a chance.

Seems like Universities (and schools) might be the place to find a job in English Literature. Although those jobs are probably not plentiful. Otherwise, there is little demand for it out in the working world. Other than, a bullet on your resume that you have a degree in English Literature, it may not improve your job prospects.

Back in the day, maybe 40-50 years ago, having a degree in “anything” (English Lit, History, etc.) meant a job (and job security) in an unrelated field. Not any longer.

“Marxist studies in disguise”

You called it:

Final Year electives can give you the tools you need to be a Marxist overlord from your state funded dacha:

—Changing Lives: Literature And Social Movements
—Counter-Culture And Creativity
—Life On Earth: Writing And Environment
—Revealing Gender
—Writing For Change: Writing And Advocacy

Very true. We are in a very different world now, regarding the value of college degrees in the job market.

The way things are now, one needs a degree in some particular subject, for the degree to be a valuable credential in the job market.

Businesses are looking for people with specific skills and specific educations and specific degrees. Not too many are just hiring college graduates, regardless of degree, for on the job training in the corporate world.
