Back in Detroit in the 1970s, while cleaning out an old city garage, I found an ancient sponge in the corner of the floor. I was hard, black with oil and grime, and covered with dust, and I believe it predated the one in the article.

...before this life-friendly gas was common throughout the sea Oxygen would not have been life friendly at first anymore than Fluorine is now. It's a highly reactive element. Fire is an obvious example of this.
Obviously life not only adapted but evolved a way to make Oxygen useful. We are lucky that plants did not.

Life tends to use energy in the most economical way possible. In the case of Oxygen plants simply toss this potential energy source into the air. Animals get enough energy from burning oxygen to move around.
