Just Watched "The year of Living Dangerously"

Posted on 05/04/2021 6:55:46 AM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

A very good flick. Accurate enough that it wasn't shown in Indonesia for the longest time. A young Mel Gibson, not too idealistic but strong willed. Indifferent western colleagues who didn't get it. A screwed up country where westerners didn't have the answer. A love affair that didn't overdo the plot. Waited 40 years to see it on TCM. Serious flick that woke types will never understand. Like Joe Bob-check it out.

No need to watch it. From the news, we’re living it.

Good movie. There’s a scene where a journalist friend (male) takes Gibson thru a slum and starving female prostitutes are literally throwing themselves against the car. The journalist friend says it’s ‘great’. A voiceover by Gibson mentions mistaking poverty for vice. Too many good scenes to mention.

I saw this film at a theater when it first was released. I did not know the character of Billy Kwan was played by a woman.. I just thought whomever did the casting found a wonderful unknown local actor for the part. When I watched the credits at the end, and saw the character was played by a woman, I gasped, as did several other viewers!! Linda Hunt earned her Oscar, for sure!

I saw Living Dangerously in a theater the year it came out.

Have not seen it since.

While refreshing my memory at Wiki, I read something I had completely forgotten...

Linda Hunt - the dwarf female who most recently starred on NCIS Los Angeles - played a Chinese-Australian male photographer in Living Dangerously.

Hunt won the Supporting Actress Academy Award for that trans-gender role in 1983.

So, Hollywood was partially LGBT Woke as far back as 1983.

I say partially because Hunt would probably be condemned in 2021 for being someone who is not half Chinese or trans in real life.

Excellent movie. Weaver is one hot seductress in it. Good story and great acting.

The theme is haunting and just so nice.

The movie didn’t gross that much(Wikipedia). Gibson was ornery + serious. It reminded me of the final scene in Blackhawk Down where the local warlord in the helicopter said: “Stay out of this.” There would be no solution without a lot of people dying.

‘The movie didn’t gross that much’

Gibson was not that well known. The subject was too complicated for most Americans but not for the muslims that were offended. That’s why production was done in the P.I. and then moved after the P.I. muslims took their turn being offended. The communists in that country were receiving weapons from China.

The aftermath: I dunno where Indonesia is at today. All I know is that Japan and Germany were settled after millions had to die. Both are peaceful. Patton wanted Russia and MacArthur wanted China. We were on a roll. How much $ did the cold war cost? Would we have gotten over the carnage required? Our karma is bad enough with our enemies.

Germany and Japan had long educated histories. Missed opportunity. Russia and China have the same so perhaps there’s hope. Indonesia is both asian and muslim. Like the movie communism offers hope first.

Suharto was to Indonesia, as Pinochet was to Chile.
