A very good flick. Accurate enough that it wasn't shown in Indonesia for the longest time. A young Mel Gibson, not too idealistic but strong willed. Indifferent western colleagues who didn't get it. A screwed up country where westerners didn't have the answer. A love affair that didn't overdo the plot. Waited 40 years to see it on TCM. Serious flick that woke types will never understand. Like Joe Bob-check it out.
Why should we watch it?
Because it is a well made movie .........the caliber you can’t find much anymore.....
Has it been 40 years already?
This may be it (I think it is) on archive.org:

Caveat.....
I hate to recommend movies because my memory is challenged to recall if there are offensive scenes....such as graphic language, adult scenes etc.....
...I don’t think so......I think the movie was more circumspect
Fell in love with her character in that movie
Linda Hunt was stellar
Loved the Wsyang
Wayang
Why should we watch it?
Michael Murphy. The guy who got into a couple of bar fights with Gibson. He hires a deformed singer/beggar to perform for Gibson at a bar. Gibson is offended like I was when stationed overseas and observed some of the indifference and racism some of our troops displayed. Then there was all the poverty. What was the answer? Westerners didn’t have the answer while muslims were the perps. Linda Hunt won the oscar.
IIRC she won Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role (playing a man)
I am going to watch it again. I saw it years ago and had forgotten about it.
But I do recall it was impactful.
The only weak part was Gibson/Weaver crashing a roadblock and getting shot at. I guess that was living dangerously. Love too.
Joe Bob gave us the best quote in the history of film criticism: “Congressmen are like body odors - people can tolerate their own, but can’t stand anybody else’s.” :)
Good flick.
What’s her name gender-bends brilliantly.
“I guess that was living dangerously”
That was leaving dangerously!
Super good movie!! Great soundtrack -Vangelis at his best.
