A Soviet television adaptation of The Lord of the Rings thought to have been lost to time was rediscovered and posted on YouTube last week, delighting Russian-language fans of JRR Tolkien.
The 1991 made-for-TV film, Khraniteli, based on Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, is the only adaptation of his Lord of the Rings trilogy believed to have been made in the Soviet Union.
Aired 10 years before the release of the first instalment of Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy, the low-budget film appears ripped from another age: the costumes and sets are rudimentary, the special effects are ludicrous, and many of the scenes look more like a theatre production than a feature-length film.

Interested, but dont want to invest that much time. :)
The Orcs are the good guys?
Gollum is hilarious.
The artwork in the scenes is quite well done capturing details unlike other cartoon-styled movies, and many scenes are quite beautiful.
Ralph Bakshi made a film version as well.

for later
It’s been on YouTube for 10 years...
There is a Soviet-era Russian adaptation of The Hobbit on youtube as well.
That one really does look line a community theater adaptation of the book with Community Access TV effects. But despite the shabby production, I enjoyed it because it had tremendous heart and everyone was giving it their best effort.
My favorite adaptation of The Hobbit is the Rankin Bass animated film. A BBC radio production from the 60’s is also worth a listen, though it starts out a bit rough.
Got to give credit where its due as most recent military movies especially ones depicting WW2 are very, very good.
Bakshis version was more faithful to the book than Jacksons.
I was thinking Sauron would be the good guy.
He’s just trying to get back the ring that the western imperialist’s stole from him.
In Soviet Russia, Sauron confiscate Ring from Frodo!
yes but it was a cartoon.
Yes. A badly drawn cartoon. I’m waiting for a decent LOTR version.
Comrade Frodo?
