Shocking photos show what happened when a dozen tractor-trailers skidded out of control on snow-covered Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania during Wednesday night’s winter storm — killing one person and injuring a number of others.
The 66-vehicle pileup, including 55 trucks and 11 passenger vehicles, over a mile span on the westbound side of the highway happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday in Clinton County, State Police said Thursday.

Some terribly smashed vehicles. They were overdriving the conditions. Then, in 5 seconds, lives were ruined.

You’d think FedEx would have figured out that pulling doubles when the roads are icy is not such a good idea.

Truckers on I-80 drive no matter what the conditions are. Without a steady flow of trucks along I-80 people in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, etc. would be faced with empty stores.
After every bad storm in that section of Pennsylvania's mountainous north you see crashed trucks.

Full disclosure: I despise Tommie the Commie Wolf.
Nevertheless: The crowning achievement of his administration is the proactive approach that the Pennsylvania DOT has been taking with winter storms, especially banning EMPTY tractor trailers, RVs, empty trucks, etc from the Interstates.
In previous years’ storms there would have been at least 3 or 4 of these multi-MVAs. Even one is one too many but this is real improvement.

A drone can be useful to fly over a long convoy and warn them troubles ahead of time. However, during a severe storm, it can not fly. So there goes the option.

Black ice is a big danger this time of year. Since it's the same color as the road you only know your on it if you feel a slip. Best just to lay off the speed and be alert.
If you overdrive conditions you are relying on every driver in front of you not being stupid, and these days that's a bad bet.

Haven’t driven these highways but I imagine they aren’t fun in the snow. That is an understatement. Fog, bridges that ice up, snow, steep inclines and curves, only two lanes for each direction, and a tremendous number of long distance tractor trailer trucks.

Heavy loads are your friend in snow and wind.
Empty trailers are...the opposite.

I wonder if there are videos from any of the trucks and cars.
Something caused a series of drivers to interpret a very dangerous situation as safe. That something would probably be obvious from such videos.

No, this is why there will never be a “truckers strike”.
If some Indie or Corporate type is driving in this weather - it would indicate a real need for the $ that comes with.

Black ice is a big danger this time of year. Since it's the same color as the road you only know your on it if you feel a slip. My first indication that I was on black ice was that the car was spinning like a top. Fortunately it did not hit anything before stopping. My California-acquired driving skills were not adequate for real winters.

Can’t have one without the other. Slow down when it’s present. Not rocket science. Every car has an outside temp sensor. Wish there was video of this! Cheers
