A set of newly declassified White House tapes reveal in stark detail President Richard Nixon’s deep antipathy towards India and Indians, which, fanned by his National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger, determined United States policy towards New Delhi in the early 1970s.
At a meeting with a group of senior officials in the Oval Office on June 17, 1971, Nixon disparaged Indian women as the “most unattractive women in the world”, and Indians as the “most sexless” and “pathetic” people.

I doubt Nixon’s personal feelings had that much to do with it - India back then was nominally a non-aligned state but in practical terms it was a socialist nation and a friend and client of the Soviet Union. Today, we have a lot of interests in common and a rival in common in China - things have changed and it’s time for a much closer relationship with India.

Ok, I will clarify a bit. The Few Christian Indians I worked with were all good people, (And I am not a Christian so I am not biased) others not so much.

i dunno...to be fair, you gotta put the China thing into context...he did use them as leverage against Vietnam. He had to end that war and the last thing he needed was another China to the rescue ala Korean war...

It’s not like we sent American soldiers there in a bloody war that Nixon stopped and Democrats wanted lost and Nixon gone but now so many of our imports are made in......Vietnam. America also loves to import Indian people when Americans can do the same job and the Democrats want Trump gone.

When I think of India, I think of 1 billion poor, destitute serfs, drinking out of mud puddles and eating anything they can scavenge up. While the upper elite of their caste system live like kings.

I don’t find them particularly sexy either.
I don’t know that Vietnam was a big factor in normalizing relations in such a massive fashion. Everyone knew it was a lost cause, though they wouldn’t admit that to the US public.
I could see some talks and diplomacy taking place to avoid complications in a specific situation, mostly off record.
But a wholesale world-stage Geo-politcal rearrangement being needed to end Vietnam? Not so much.
Overall, I liked Nixon but he just had no way of knowing how China would have the US bent over and holding it’s ankles by the new millennium.
