The land with no face masks: Holland's top scientists say there's no solid evidence coverings work
Daily Mail ^ | August 1,2020 | y IAN BIRRELL

Holland's position is based on assessments by the Outbreak Management Team, a group of experts advising the government. It first ruled against masks in May and has re-evaluated the evidence several times, including again last week.

It believes they detract from a clear three-pronged message that has kept deaths from coronavirus down to less than half the rate in Britain: wash hands regularly, maintain social distancing of 1.5 metres and stay at home if suffering any symptoms.

The one exception outside of the medical frontline has been on public transport, where masks are mandatory on the basis it is difficult to stay apart on crowded buses, ferries and trains. 'We have seen this approach works,' said Christian Hoebe, a professor of infectious diseases in Maastricht and member of the advisory team. 'Face masks should not be seen as a magic bullet that halts the spread.

'The evidence for them is contradictory. In general, we think you must be careful with face masks because they can give a false sense of security. People think they're immune from disease or stop social distancing. That is very negative.'

Hoebe, head of infectious disease control in Zuid-Limburg, the region hit hardest when the pandemic struck Holland, pointed to a Norwegian study showing 200,000 people must wear surgical masks for one week to stop a single Covid-19 case.

When did multiple countries in Europe become more free than America?

This negates their whole theory. If masks dont work there is no need to use them on public transport.

There is plenty of contradicting opinion by experts about the use of masks..but if your govt truly believes the side that says masks provide no benefit then you shouldnt be requiring them at all.

Full title

The land with no face masks: Holland’s top scientists say there’s no solid evidence coverings work and warn they could even damage the fight against Covid-19

Good article....maybe the best reason from the article...

As I walked around the sun-dappled streets of Amsterdam, something felt strange in this world swept by fear and pandemic. There was laughter coming from barges sliding along the famous canals, clusters of cyclists clogged the streets, shoppers dipped into chic boutiques, the barber shops seemed busy and cafes served couples chatting over coffee.

I heard many voices of tourists in bars and restaurants, while even the seedier sides of this celebrated Dutch city had people strolling through them. It took me a moment to realise what was so weird. Then it struck me. It felt like I had stepped back in time, returning to the pre-pandemic normality of a bustling city filled with human beings whose faces were not covered by cloth.

Masks are required on mass transit

Maybe wearing masks is responsible for the surge in cases in the last 6 weeks, anecdotally speaking of course.

Masks are part of the equation, not a magic bullet. I use my mask when in crowded moments (2 is company, threes a crowd).

Who came up with this anyway with the masks and 6 feet? They don’t know anything about this virus, no cure, no vaccines, but immediately some genius declared a mask and a distance of exactly 6 feet with prevent it.

Is this about Holland or the entirety of the Netherlands? Either way, it’s HERESY!! The Maskocracy cannot be questioned. Ever.

So tell all your liberal friends that “northern European countries” don’t wearing masks.

Make HCQ and Zinc Sulfate OTC drugs and pandemic over. Forget the masks and social distance. Take the meds immediately after a cough and/or fever develops and problem solved. Stay away from Killer Cuomo and Whitmer if over 60.

“When did multiple countries in Europe become more free than America?”

Maybe because in those countries, there are only a few liberty-minded citizens left that need to be muzzled. Their populations have already been trained.

Same thing. Holland IS the Netherlands. I have been there.

Yup.
End of problem.
Life goes back to normal at once.

Do you live in Amsterdam? I mean, if you’re in the States, how did you get over there? I thought we weren’t allowed to travel outside of the border?

Of course, I’m in Canada now and the border with the U.S. is still closed, so what do I know.

Nope. Either masks reduce the viral load or they dont. If you are going to advocate that you dont need masks because they dont work ...then dont require them on public transport.

I personally believe they are part of the equation..but this story says they dont work....but uh...we are going to make them mandatory anyway on public transport.

It makes sense to me based on the reasoning they provided. Public transport is one of the only places where people have to be in close proximity with strangers for long enough to transmit the virus. We know how uniquely effective public transport is in spreading the virus because we saw what happened in the one place in America where public transport ridership is widespread.

I don’t think they’re saying masks provide no benefit at all. Just not enough to make them worthwhile. The calculus is different on a bus or subway.

So.....

Masks work....even Holland believes it... is the takeaway from this story

OTHERWISE...dont mandate them on public transport.

I’ve been watching Aussie Rules Football in the morning and no one there seems to be wearing them either.

If those masks work . . where are the bio-hazard containers for those masks that are from the infected, HUH!

I noticed they were interviewing people.

If you are being interviewed, science says you need to wear a mask. Science also says you don’t need the virtue signal for the grocery store.
