U.S. Mail Slowdown
Vanity

Posted on 07/30/2020 1:29:36 PM PDT by yarddog

I have received no mail for six days. I just phone the Postmaster and he said he has received maybe ten calls today.

This is a rural route.

He does not know why but they are only getting a third or fourth as much mail as they usually do.

My son waited a week for a package to get to our local post office from the hub our mail passes through (we are in a small town). Because the package was tracked he knew where it was and it sat there that long. We were told that the postal hub was very short-staffed (not sure if it is due to COVID or what).

That’s exactly what a mail lady friend told me

Of course, she blamed it on the fact that the new PG didn’t have a mail delivery background, starting at the bottom

Post office has been short staffed for awhile , lot of younger people don’t stick around at the job very long. I cant imagine Corona helps matters because you automatically get two weeks off if you test positive and the people who work next to would get a few days off too to get tested even if they feel fine. Luckily I’m in a big office and only one guy has been sick

Our mail seems to be back to normal, but during the height of the COVID pandemic (mid-March through around mid-May), that was the same for us. No mail for several days in a row. Very strange.

And millions of Americans are going to be relying on mail-in voting this November (and early voting as well???). Riiiight........

VERY interesting. Wow. I’ll bet you’re right... lack of overtime pay is why the U.S. Mail has slowed down overall.

Took the IRS over two weeks to cash my Quarterly Tax payment. Usually cashed in less than a week. Not sure if it was due to slow mail or COVID nonsense. But I didn’t mind the extra week of interest.

I had a small package (trade paperback) take EIGHT DAYS to get from Missoula, MT to Denver, CO. (Straight shot on interstate highways.) It had tracking, but kept getting that annoying ‘Item in transit to the next facility’ message...updated every day for a week. It FINALLY showed up 16 DAYS after it originally shipped.

And I've got to admit, there is something to that. Having an MBA does not mean you actually understand all the nuts and bolts of the business you are running. My dad worked for a steel company which hit the skids after they hired a new CEO who came from Pepsi and knew jack about making steel.

The counterargument is that the Postal Service is failing at least in part due to a poor longstanding work culture that needs to be shaken up. And you can't achieve that with an insider. And since there is only one post office in this country where do you find such people? FedEx or UPS I assume. Trumps PG at least appears to have worked for some logistics outfit.

He does not know why

If you lived in my neighborhood it's because the delivery driver is sitting on a back street for about 45 minutes talking on his cell phone at approx. 2:30 p.m.......

Have called the local station every time but can never get an answer, not even a voice mail............

Postal trucks are now equipped with GPS and if they are walking a route they have to scan in regularly at certain pre-determined spots. They are not allowed to linger in any one place for too long. The Postal Service pretty much knows where they are at any given time.

At the post office where my friend works they disciplined an employee when GPS revealed his truck regularly parked behind a particular house for 30 minutes or more. Turns out he was having an affair with the woman who lived there.

Tried to fire him, but the union brought him back through a grievance process.

I think mail delivery Mon. Wed. Fri.

That appears to be the case where I live only delivery is every day with only a few people actually receiving mail and the local delivery person taking a break in the back street.

They're not overwhelmed, they're just lazy. Legitimate mail such as billing notices have been taken over by on line banking and payments and most of the crap the post office delivers is just junk mail such as political advertisements and local business advertisements.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever why there should be a slow down in delivery service considering all that's left for them to deliver..........
