I spent a few years stationed in Berlin, long ago. Rusty beyond words!

Are you talking about viruses getting through the blood-brain barrier? They certainly do:

Viral entry to the brain: There are a variety of means by which viruses enter the brain, primarily via neuronal transport or by crossing of one of several barriers to the central nervous system (CNS), including the BBB or the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (choroid plexus).

After this point, community spread occurred and was undetected due to the CDC narrow case definition that required direct travel to China or direct contact with a known case to even be considered for testing. This lack of testing was a critical error and allowed an outbreak in Snohomish County and surroundings to grow to a sizable problem before it was even detected.

That says it all. The CDC is probably very competent at filling out their annual government calendars for vacation time. Disease control is a distant second.

“Could flooding the lungs with fluid disable these “mechano- and chemoreceptors in the lung”...”

That sounds like what the body is naturally trying to do - pneumonia.

“Favilavir has been used by both Japan and China to treat severe cases of COVID-19, and the DCB team expects it to become a significant drug in treating the disease, according to the report.”

“The interview with the American couple on the ship was what made me first think about it. Their daughter is a doctor in DC and spoke with someone at the CDC who said it was likely in the air circulating on the ship.”

Agree - it certainly seemed to be the air in the ship. I wonder if they’ll actually investigate it, rather than just telling people to sanitize their hands every 5 minutes.

They supported their paper with a mouse model. ACE2 expression is far more pervasive in neuronal mouse protein expression than human.

I'll have my wife review it also (neurologist). She is my sanity check related to this and our current work. I think the evidence still points to cytokine expression, pulmonary failure, cerebral hypoxic and organ failure.

We saw numerous videos from China where end stage was seizure.

The following was fairly obvious to me many weeks ago. But from the article on the mutations (thanks - interesting, easy to understand):

“We now believe that the Seattle area seeding event was ~Jan 15 and we’re now ~7 weeks later. I expect Seattle now to
look like Wuhan around ~1 Jan, when they were reporting the first clusters of patients with unexplained viral pneumonia. We are currently estimating ~600 infections in Seattle, this matches my phylodynamic estimate of the number of infections in Wuhan on Jan 1.

Three weeks later, Wuhan had thousands of infections and was put on large-scale lock-down. However, these large-scale non-pharmaceutical interventions to create social distancing had a huge impact on the resulting epidemic. China averted many millions of infections through these intervention measures and cases there have declined substantially.”

The one main difference though - they won’t be putting us on lockdown. Our governor (Inslee - another idiot) said that now is not the time to panic and shut down public events. But that older people might want to stay away from crowds as they are more at risk.

Yes - they will be more at risk of dying, but not any more at risk of getting it! So if you ask me, if old people should stay away from crowds, the rest of us should too.

I knew your wife was a doctor but didn’t know the specialty. I went a ways into neuropsychology but diverted at the end.

The New Wuhan area should definitely go on lockdown in canceling schools and any large group gatherings. Is Governor Inslee crazy?

Correction: the proper name of the city and metro area is still Seattle. The name “New Wuhan” is just its nickname.

Mucosolvan™ does even better which is why I went to the trouble of procuring it.

Maybe...

Reminded me...

Years ago while in college, every year I got bad bronchitis almost to the day...Preceding the bronchitis was mold allergy season...I would have lots of drainage, sneezing etc...

Doc said that allergies made my throat like fly paper for other bacteria and viruses which came right after the bout with mold allergies.

Ever since, I try very hard to stop allergies rather than suffer with them for avoidance of true viral colds, etc.

taking from patients? that’s just rude.

We didn’t panic over masks. Have some left over from fire season that should do us just fine.

Crazy?

After the first death on Saturday they gave a press conference. It wasn’t the gov, but one of his lackeys. Their big plan:

1) open up the emergency control center.
2) Wash the metro buses every day.
3) Create medical teams to go into the homeless camps to educate them about the coronavirus. Possible help them establish tents or areas especially for sick people.

Those were the three action items discussed.

Today was a little bit better. They are going to buy a hotel for patients. Also looking at using portable shelters to house sick people (sounded like shipping containers). They did say how one of the state labs in Seattle has started testing for the virus, and the University of Washington has also started testing.

What they should do (and maybe they will) is shut down the schools, and then use that space for sick people.

Thanks. After reading that guy's forecast, I think that when I have to go out to a store I'm going to wear a mask and googles.

Just like with prepping four weeks ago, if you waited until now it is too late for a lot of things. Wait another week to regularly wear a mask - that might be too late. Heck - it very well could already be too late. (We live a few miles from the nursing home, and my wife spent half a day at Evergreen hospital early last week).
