First Hand Account: Coronavirus patient says disease 'not the scary thing that everyone thinks it is'
Fox News ^ | 02/29/2020 | Sam Dorman

Posted on 02/29/2020 12:31:41 PM PST by SeekAndFind

A man who tested positive for the coronavirus told Fox News on Saturday that people should stop freaking out about the outbreak.

"I'm not the one to advise the experts on this, but I personally believe that it's not the scary thing that everyone thinks it is," Mark Jorgenson told "Your World."

Jorgenson and his wife were evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan. Authorities quarantined the ship after a man who exited in Hong Kong had tested positive. According to Jorgenson, his wife initially tested positive and stayed in Japan while he didn't get a positive result until he was back in the United States.

Speaking from his hospital bed in California, Jorgenson said he was fine.

"I'm not symptomatic, my wife tested positive without symptoms and now is clear of it. So I would say maybe we can step back and breathe a little bit and not freak out," he told Fox News host Neil Cavuto.

Jorgenson continued testing positive and needed to obtain two consecutive negative results in order to be released. As he was speaking with Cavuto, he said his wife had just received her second negative result and would be returning home.

Over 700 other passengers and crew who were on the ship were infected with COVID-19, which had for several weeks marked the largest instance of communal spread.

A British man who was sickened by the coronavirus while aboard the cruise ship has died, reports citing the Japanese health ministry said.

The man, who had been in quarantine in Japan after testing positive for the virus, marks the first foreign passenger on the ship to die, according to Kyodo News. It would also mark the first fatality involving a British citizen, according to Sky News.

"The flu kills 0.1%.
The US at last report had 68 cases of Coronavirus and 1 death from it. That’s a 1.5% rate. And only 7 of the 68 have recovered, so we might have more deaths in that group. Hope not.

Do the math 1.5%/.01% = 15 times more likely. But that’s a better experience than most other nations with more than few cases have seen."

This latest iteration of coronavirus is so new, and the vast majority of the data is very suspect.

Haven't we been told over and over again, that the test kits are (1) in scarce supply and (2) not very reliable?

Can we say with 100% certainty that there are only 68 cases in the U.S.? No, of course not. There just as easily could be 5,000 with the vast majority asymptomatic. That would be a 0.02% death rate. Far lower than the "common" flu.

Even China's alleged number of infected are almost certainly grossly under reported. Why? Because most people aren't counted when they don't go to the hospital or local clinic. The numbers reported are "confirmed."

The real danger to our country is not Covid-19 itself....it's the fear, panic and hysteria that will be the problem. Specifically, to our financial markets and the economy as a whole.

Im reading your posts, and respectfully have to ask, if this not much worse than the regular flu, why did the Chinese take such drastic measures? Historically, it seems that China has been fairly tolerant of civilian deaths.

Welcome to the rational circle. This is well elucidated and erudite argument. Lets what to see the responses of how many ways you are wrong because 1/67 = 1.5% and that is the By God true rate....

Thank you! That’s a great link. I was thinking that hygiene was a big factor in actually getting the virus, but I will have to look into the mortality rates. We have all of our supplies, and strangely enough, our three cars got new tires all within the past month! :)

Stay safe.

So to get this straight, claiming a number that is based on a likely falsely low number is bad science

Sorry Doc. I am a physicist. A measurement is a measurement. Sometimes data is bad and you set it aside, but you explain why you are setting it aside, why it is bad data - the technician was drunk or the instrument was faulty - and all the other data you have taken is consistent with a different result.

But you don't just throw out the numbers you have and invoke other numbers you don't have instead because you "know" what the truth must be. That's called dry-labbing, when you are being polite.

I differ with what you say...

End results matter when you are comparing the nature of how many had it and what happened to them

Recovery

Death

So in observing the same with the new one the same is in effect, how many have the symptoms and actually have contracted it and what is the outcome and consistency of the people, and other data points that provide clues as to how to treat it etc.

Many are looking at this from the standpoint of the Spanish Flu which swept through our country early in the last century. I do not see the comparison between them at all, and maybe they just hope that it will be the same

Who knows, but their posts surely paint an interesting picture

Over the last 48 to 72 hours, 21 more nations have reported their first case.

I found it odd that all these little bergs found their first case within this
short window after a month of this virus circling the planet.

These new nations represent around 25-33% of the total of all nations now
reporting.

They’re little bergs of a nation too. Strange.

Last 48 hours:

Azerbaijan
Belarus
Denmark
Estonia
Iceland
Lithuania
Mexico
Monaco
Netherlands
New Zealand
Nigeria
North Ireland
Qatar
San Martine

Here are the ones if you extend it out to 72 hours.

Brazil
Georgia
Greece
North Macedonia
Norway
Pakistan
Romania

That’s 21 out of the 61 nations reporting...

...all finding their first case in the last 48 to 72 hours.

Is the American population as healthy as you think?

I wonder what our ageing populations is compare to China.

Another factor to look at we have a huge obese populations.
This population has many heath issues related to the extra weight. I know at least 10 people in this category that will be severe.

For my house hold I am good but my wife is not she has an ACC of the trachea that is inoperable due to the location. She has a hard time breathing already. We will stay lock down away from people until it goes away.

So will it be 10% severe at most still?

Its a good question. The Chinese are also geopolitically speaking loathe to have something that would reflect poorly on the state. If you are asking my opinion, I think that it likely is a leaked bioweapon that is not ready for primetime. Using your vein of questioning, perhaps they used their own people as test subjects — I would not put it beyond the Chinese Government. On the other hand, perhaps this reveals that its healthcare system is not the glorious system it is purported to be. Whatever the reason, China is not forthcoming because it would not be honorable for them to admit problems, inferiority in treatment, or an illegal biowarfare program. Truly, I think we are asking the wrong question here. I think the question we should be asking would be — is this an intentional act.

That being said, this is my opinion only. I am able to admit the difference between my opinion and statistical fact...

Here is the game that sadly plays out on Free Republic numerous times per day.

1. A group of worst case scenario doomers spew the Chinese numbers as ‘fact’ and often refer to it as ‘raw data’.

2. Someone with a science or medical background sees the statement then attempts to correct the misinterpretation of the raw data and tries to explain how their reasoning is scientifically incorrect.

3. The doomers quickly point out that the science person is relying on Chinese data (which is what the doomer used to begin with).

4. The science guys try to peel the onion back another layer to explain that YES the Chinese data is bad, which is why a serosurvey will reveal the truth. Then science guy usually points out that virtually any epidemiologist will state with authority and the apparent death rate in the early stages of an outbreak appear artificially high because the mild & asymptomatic cases are completely missed. This is the denominator for the mortality rate calculation!

5. The doomers then say that the science guys are arrogant and not taking this seriously and their actions will lead to many more not being prepared.

LMAO!

How can our govt tell us its not spreading when they have not done any testing like South Korea. Last time i checked wr hsd tested less tha 500 people.

These are the experts folks
They have no clue ss to what is going in. We are reacting to everything and not on the offensive at all. Can you all not see this?

Being a physicist then you must understand that it is likely the study cohort you continually site is insufficiently powered to draw conclusions. That is called standard science. Can we at least agree that your numbers based on you analysis is worst case scenario. I think that would be a fair interpretation.

“If” these sparks are attempts to reignite it would suggest that the virus is not very efficient as sustained h2h transmission. To take it a bit further...why didn’t infections outside of Wuhan explode at the same rate as it did within Wuhan?

Bad data reporting out?

Wuhan getting out of control before they knew what as happening?

Other bergs were braced to react immediately when seeing a potential case.

Quarantines...

Other than that, I don’t know.
