New Dell Windows 10 PC. Want *clean* install.
Self | 1/5/2020 | Self

Posted on 01/05/2020 6:31:29 AM PST by CatOwner

I am about to receive a Dell PC with Windows 10 Pro installed. It will have both an SSD drive (first one for me) and a SATA drive. With the past Dell PC purchases, I would take the supplied Windows OS disk and reinstall from scratch. Too much junk gets installed by Dell, and it seems trying to delete programs is more cumbersome than just performing a fresh install. I also like learning the clean install process before I actually put personal information on the new PC.

Only issues are I have not used Windows 10 at all (initial need is for installing TurboTax), and I don't think Dell (or anyone else) supplies a Windows 10 installation disk with purchased PCs. I am looking for advice as to how best to approach this.

Windows 10 is NOT easy.

I have been running five boxes with Win 10 for years now without so much as a hiccup. My experience has been that Win10 is super easy, fast and rock solid.

“I bought a Dell Alienware 17 R5 Laptop from a private sale. Awesome machine BUT Dell built these with no support for Windows 7.”

Did you know those were also sent out from Dell new with Linux installed as an optional OS? They are already geared to run Linux. :)

“Just delete the crap and move on.”

Yep, The best option for a brand new box under warranty.

Well I guess the Poster can listen to you sole expereince, or learn from 100,000 people who got HOSED by Microsoft in 2019.

FORBES 01/05: "Windows 10 begins 2020 hoping to turn a page on a bug-ridden 2019. Problems ranged from frustrating to limiting, chaotic to simply bizarre and Microsoft was even hit by a whistle-blower exposing the reasons for the increase in instability. But now 2020 is off to a rocky start as well.... 01/05

“Next time I’ll just overpay for a Mac.”

I use Macs and install a disk builder of W 8.1 and install it via Parallels software...

What this means is INSIDE of my Mac(s) is a fully functioning Windows 8.1 (I also have a W 7) PC.

Best of both world and don’t forget to TURN OFF UPDATES.

Best!

During the installation process it will give you the option to delete all programs.

Uh, no. I my case it ‘found’ my Win7 installation on my SSD and reformatted it, deleting without asking all my other data on the SSD as well, then installed Win10 on hard drive over Win 8.

Your situation has nothing to do with the original poster's situation. He is receiving a new box with Win10 installed. There is no previous operating system on the box to be found and reinstalled.

Many good suggestions here.

One advice for future purchases.....buy directly from Microsoft and other who offer the PC without the bloatware.

Reward the vendors who do not force you through cleaning a brand new PC.

Never experienced any issues on any of my Win 10 installs here or at client sites

100K users with a user base of over 800 million devices is less then .02% so the problem is extremely rare.

More people were plagued with bad Mac motherboards issues where Apple’s solution was, go buy a new Mac!

I bought brand new Lenovo P class workstations, nothing on them except for windows 10 pro

I think the bloatware nonsense is dying off, at least on the business class boxes, as for consumer machines, I have no idea, I haven’t bought a consumer class machine in decades.

My “clean” install is MacBook Pro. Windows 8 destroyed any confidence I had in windows. You can install Linux on later Mac.

Or he could listen to me and millions and millions and millions of other people who have not had any issues. I have no relationship with Microsoft and don't care either way, but my experience with Win10 has been nothing but positive.

New Dell Windows 10 PC. Want *clean* install.

There is no such thing as a clean install, if you have Windows 10. It's dirty!

Absolutely. Microsoft deserves no more business. The MAC Pro in comparison is awesome and the out-of-box install is 1000x improvement of MSFT.
