Sheriff: California deputy on leave after violently removing carjacking victim from vehicle; man later died

Believing they had stopped a stolen car after a miles-long pursuit, two California sheriff’s deputies tried to arrest a carjacking victim...

Body camera video from the November incident begins mid-chase, during which authorities said David Ward, 52, twice stopped for deputies only to flee again. Speeds at one point reached 73 mph before a deputy, trailed by two officers from the Sebastopol Police Department, stopped Ward at a dead-end in Bloomfield, about a 30-minute drive southwest of Santa Rosa.

Deputies Charlie Blount and Jason Little, veterans with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, tried to extract Ward from the car, but they struggled because Ward’s legs were apparently pinned beneath the steering wheel.

Harry Stern, who is representing Blount, said Ward was responsible for his own death because he took “bizarre actions” that left deputies thinking he was an armed carjacker rather than a carjacking victim.

Stern said that it was his understanding that medical evidence would show Ward had a pre-existing medical condition and methamphetamine in his system. There were no indications of trauma to Ward’s neck, the lawyer said.

Another policeman told Blount and Little that Ward was stuck, and Blount grabbed Ward by his hair in an attempt to pull Ward out of the car through the driver’s window. Blount pulled Ward’s head away from the car before appearing to slam it into the top of the driver’s door, just as Little deployed the Taser. Ward yelped in pain, groaned, and said something inaudible on the body camera footage.

Blount then placed “one of his arms around the neck of Ward and attempted to administer a carotid restraint,” police said...

Some cops are just ass holes. The vast{96.99}majority are just doing their job with no egotistical or self righteousness complex.I worked 12 years in the Military Police and 22 years in the NYPD, so I feel comfortable in stating the previous opinion.

Report em and hold them responsible. I went after a full Bird once for conduct unbecoming an officer, I got rung through the ringer to just cool my attitude and let the waters calm. (or else). He ended up with an early retirement, loss of pension and reduction in rank to Lt. Col. To me, the law is the law and if you can ruin an enlisted man for a non lethal crime, then a ranking officer should be held to the same standard. This is true in civilian life as well. It’s not that difficult to follow the law and the guys who put their life on the line every day are just doing their job. Have a Very Merry Christmas to all my Free Republic family.

He had recovered his car- he was not currently a captive - And did not pull over for lights and sirens. So, yes, odd behavior.

Cops were still stupid brutes.

A couple years ago, in NJ, a car fleeing a police chase crashed into an innocent driver, setting his car on fire. The cops beat up the man in flames when he left his car. Then said they were beating out the flames. With a closed fist on his head.

When the “vast majority” take any steps whatsoever to distinguish the “@ssholes” we will do the same.

I did 4 years as a cop in USAF and agree with you. Their response wasn’t in proportion since they failed to ID properly all occupants,of the vehicle.

Body camera video from the November incident begins mid-chase?

What’s that all about? Are they not required to activate cameras during a pursuit? Or do they initiate the cameras whenever they feel like it?

I saw a video of a guy who was having a diabetic seizure and had pulled his vehicle into the turn about in the median. The police pulled in behind him to check him out. They ordered him out of his vehicle and to show his hands. Because of his seizure he could not respond to their commands. That did not stop them from beating the hell out of him.

Having a hard time understanding why the victim— who was not a carjacker-— did not stop for the police. Was is because he was high on methamphetamine? That is.. for a “non-victim” a blue light in the mirror means-— my blood chemistry will DUI me, so.... I gonna run like hell. Then get stopped and pulled out my car, and get killed.

Just stupid, but typical meth head behavior. Check out some videos on your tub... titled meth head shopping— symptomatic crazy hypermovement actions, and zero sense. great drug- thanks thugs.

Did you shame any of the bad cops? Did you report them to higher-ups?

There was an instance of a guy having an epileptic seizure; he was coming out of it, but it apparently wasn’t fast enough for the responding officers: they beat and arrested the guy.
