Strained or lost relationships because of politics

Posted on 11/17/2019 7:13:16 AM PST by neverevergiveup

How many FReepers have lost or strained relationships with family, friends, co-workers, etc. because of your support for Trump and/or for being a conservative? Clearly, there is a lot of actual hatred out there, and it has already turned violent. The left want to remove a duly elected US President, because they don't like him. They don't care about the opinions of their fellow citizens who voted for him and support him, and they are perfectly willing to disenfranchise them - or worse. I thought having people weigh in about their experiences would help to understand how widespread this is, and how deep the split in the US is.

Personally, I have lost someone who was my best friend for several decades. The only contact I have with this person now is when he sends me hate-filled texts about Trump. I haven't responded to those, as I know he isn't looking for a dialogue. He's angry, even though the Trump presidency has probably been good for him financially.

There are others (friends and co-workers) who do not hesitate to vent their hatred for Trump and Republicans, and deride those who don't think like them as 'stupid'. Interestingly, those who do support Trump, and there are very many, are the least openly vocal. I think they are afraid of being shouted down.

There are some liberal family members. At Thanksgiving and other gathering times I try not to discuss politics with them.

I've had people de-friend me on social media because of my Christian and conservative beliefs.

I've not un-friended anyone because of their beliefs. I now let people know up front that IF they want to be in contact on social media be prepared for very conservative posts.

Some accept, some don't.

I slowly but surely have divested myself of all known democrats. They are my mortal enemies. Still have some residual relatives who are rats but as long as “delicate” subjects are avoided it’s under control.

My family is split. And long before Trump came along. But we know better than to bring up politics when we get together. Each side seems to have an “either you’ll figure it out or you won’t. I’ve already told you” attitude.

I am very, very fortunate. The family, boss and co-workers I care about either support Trump and hold conservative beliefs or have no strong feelings against either one. I steer clear of conversations about politics and conservative beliefs at work in any case. Work is always busy so I stick to getting my workload done and then I go home. Not a lot of workplace socializing or chit-chat for me.

Same here. A guy I literally grew up with. 50+ years of a friendship went out the window when he moved to Seattle and became a ‘’Democratic Socialist’’. I have six other siblings. I don’t talk to three of them because they’re liberals.

Folks. It is more than politics. They are evil. The rank and file followers are being mislead. The leadership are evil.

I have a few older Democrats in the family. But they are “Kennedy” democrats and support Trump because they still have a few brain cells left and can tell right from wrong, just from unjust. But they will vote against him out of ignorant “party loyalty” because they follow like sheep.

Would they reconsider parties? Absolutely not, and I yell at them for this. Even though they know the Democrat party is now the Communist party and don’t agree with it, they still hope to save it by continuing to vote for these fools. For some reason they are locked in mentally and right or wrong will not budge.

This “we will get it right someday” is just not cutting it and is helping destroy this country.

I prefer the evangelization approach. Most anti-Trumps I know have a handful of things on which we agree. I start from there, and haven't had to defriend etc anyone...because people CAN change (though some men, you can't reach) and I'd rather they be lead out of the wilderness.

For example...gays and guns are polarizing issues. Right after the Orlando shooting, this flag came out:

Most of the time, when people see this flag, they are initially stunned...then they stammer...then they think...and then you get them to see the Secend Amendment applies to ALL Americans and isn't about hunting.

Rinse and repeat a few times on different subjects, and except for the loons who'd never change anyway, you won't have Thanksgiving with 2 people.

I attended the local bluegrass jam yesterday. There are people there who literally won’t stay in the same room as my brother and I because we’re conservatives. If we visit one of the other jam rooms they get up and leave. We never mixed politics and music but someone found out that he had volunteered on a political campaign for a conservative. Now we’re persona non grata with a lot of folks that used to be friends (or at least friendly).

Their churlishness is amusing.

That is awful. Went to cousin wedding this summer first time all of my siblings, parents, aunts, uncles and cousins were in same room together in close to 20 years. We all took pictures, shot the shit, had drinks, hung out. The one regret we all had because a lot of us hadn’t talked over many years was how stupid we all were. And none of it had to do with politics. A lot had to do with stuff we had all forgotten. Frankly I don’t even know all their politics, it’s family. Life is short. I feel for you.

My social media footprint is without question conservative and in your face Pro-Trump.
I don’t post these views on a lib person’s page, once in a while they will come to mine with their twisted take. I’m brutal with no desire for prisoners. They don’t bother again. YAY !
At work I only discuss with the owners, we agree on everything.

In my family, Mr RooRoo and I are the lone conservative GOP Trump-supporters. Everyone else on my side of the family are knee jerk braying Rat jack@sses.

I no longer am on Facebook, too many snarky and nasty political posts by family snowflake millenials.

Mr RooRoo and I host every family holiday dinner and more, and I always pull out the stops with great food, liquor, fresh flowers, elaborate table decorations, etc. I literally spend several hundred dollars on each of these large family gatherings.

Mr RooRoo and I have made it known to family that there will be NO POLITICAL TALK at these family events. Thankfully, my 91 year old mother (who’s a Democrat) has also told family members the same thing. She is the one Democrat member in the family who is completely respectful to me as a conservative Republican Trump supporter.

Since my Mom and I announced the no politics warning, almost all family members have respected the rule. Occasional violators are always snarky snowflake millennials.

This Thanksgiving: if any family members at dinner start talking about politics, I will cut them off immediately. If they don’t stop, I will tell them to leave.

Strained: All my in-laws. M-I-L is a pro-teachers union, anti 2A, Trump-hater who can barely tolerate me after I talked her through an explanation of how SALT deductions are unfair to the fiscally responsible states with lower taxes. We are all in CT. Her current husband has a job for life on the state arbitration board and likes to brag about it.

Such has always been the case, half of the founders hated the other half - they were just more socially adept.

You need to serve better liquor!!!
When did society become so damn political.
I am huge Trump supporter yet I rarely if ever engage or been engaged by others about politics.
Think too many people have to much time on their hands.

I've lost my buddy of 50 years.

I spent Christmas at his home in Pismo Beach in 2016. I've never been treated so badly by him and his brother for my Trump support.

I'm done with them both.
