1. The californication GOP is almost useless. They seldom nominate anyone worth voting for. If I wanted to be a member of a damned country club, I’d apply there. Also, corruption in GOP is almost as bad as corruption in the state’s infamous communist-D party machine. Don’t even dream electing a typical calif R would clean anything up. They do everything their puppetmeisters tell them to do - just like the commie-D’s do everything soroznazi and the union bosses tell them to do. Nothing is for the good of the public or the state. The state govt apparatus is used to milk the public dry in taxes regulatory costs and highest utility rates It’s just do damned corrupt —as legislative leader Jesse Unruh explainer years ago, “we have the very government money can buy!”

When Jerry Brown authorized government employees to unionize in 1978 through the Dill Act. Since then, unions have pushed government spending on benefits and pensions to the breaking point.

Bingo:!

Jerry Brown’s first term, 1975. He began the downward spiral.

Blaming the northeast types from emigrating to CA....(now NV,ID and TX blame the new arrival Californian socialists from moving in and bringing their Commie votes with them. True!
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Really started when....

Kinfolk said Jed move away from there
Said Californy is the place you ought to be
So they loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly.
Hills, that is. Swimmin pools, movie stars.

and earlier....
Do Re Mi by
Woody Guthrie
Well, thousands of folks back east, they say,
Are leavin’ home most ev’ry day,
And they’re beatin’ the hot old dusty way
To the California line.....

If you ain’t got the do-re-mi, boys,
If you ain’t got the do-re-mi,
Well you’d better go back to beautiful Texas,
Oklahoma, Georgia, Kansas, Tennessee.
California is a garden of Eden,
It’s a paradise to live in or see.
But believe it or not,
You won’t find it so hot,
If you ain’t got the do-re-mi.

When proposition 187 was held unconstitutional. Voted for in 1994, held unconstitutional in 1999.

Even as late as 2008, CA voters passed Prop 8, defining marriage as being between a man and a woman, only to be overturned by the courts and not defended by the state. By this time it was clear the voters no longer controlled the state.

1965: When the University of California, Berkeley, administration capitulated to radical students. After that the flood of east coast radicals to California was incredible, and its been all downhill since.

Not exactly sure of the date, but it happened in 1955 when my parents moved us to Oregon.

Oregon started going the way of California in 1968 when I went in the Navy.

In my humble opinion.

In 1968 the number of anti-war incidents at the University of Oregon, Eugene, was the highest in the west and nearly the highest in the United States. The radicals were led by Californians and East Coast radicals.

I blame Berkeley.

Spot on!

The left was quietly simmering until 1964-65. It broke out with the likes of Mario Savio and the Free Speech Movement at Berkeley and quickly spread across the nation. It was significantly propelled by the Free Love movement, the hippy scene, the availability of drugs and the "Never Trust Anyone Under 30" mantra, all of which was tempting to the high school/college set.

If one today has difficulty discerning Savio's political inclinations the left at a minimum saw him at the time as a useful, effective idiot, if not an active operator. The FBI certainly understood he was well connected and gave him special attention.

Even after his death his memorial fund hosts speakers the likes of Tom Hayden, Howard Zinn, Angela Davis, Van Jones, Elizabeth Warren, and Robert Reich.

Subsequent events, many listed upthread, accelerated the swing.

So, your family is responsible for the destruction of both California AND Oregon?

“So AFAIK it’s been a gradual process over the past 50 years. “

Much earlier, when the communists moved from NYC to settle Hollywood.

The slow sword penetrates the shield. As a Navy vet, I expect you understand what I mean. California started dying soon after it became a state.

I concur. Judicial tyrany countering prop 187. That resulted in the downfall of the Repub party and state of Cal.

You Californians—you just do not matter.

Well, I got the hell out in 1979 because I saw it coming. Jerry Brown and Judge Rose Bird did it for me.

You are correct. Had it been upheld (and it was completely constitutional), California would have stopped being the magnet for illegals, and they would not have shifted the demographics and balance of power in the state. The vote in 1994 was necessary because of the 86 amnesty, but 86 wasn’t the pivotal year. The state was still salvageable til 187 was overturned by activist judges.

Nice question. California was Reagan country in the Eighties, but that was mostly because of Southern California. The oil, aviation, defense, electronics and even entertainment industries had conservative leanings. And 30-40 years later the state is strongly Democrat.

You have to look behind Reagan's California, though. California Republicans had long had progressive leanings. The state went for Theodore Roosevelt's Progressive campaign in 1912, because William Howard Taft, the more conservative Republican, couldn't get the state GOP nomination. Many California Republicans, especially in the North, were the same kind of East Coast Establishment Republicans who moved over to the Democrats in recent years.

And California, especially the Bay Area, had a strong left going back to the early 20th century. Jack London. Upton Sinclair. John Steinbeck, for a while. A lot of artists and intellectuals flocked to San Francisco, Berkeley, Carmel. Southern California had left-wing writers and movie people as well. The weakness of Democrats in early 20th century California concealed the fact that there were a lot of people further left in the state.

Why did the state flip? 1) People moving from out of state, especially New York. 2) People moving from out of the country and wanting social services. 3) The general movement of affluent professionals to the Democrats. When did it flip? My guess is the 1990s, though I can't give a date or an event. Incumbents stick around for a while even after the demographics have tipped.
