Ms. Kimmerer where did you think you "sacred" corn came from? The native people in southern Mexico created maize by artificial selection and cross-breeding of a wild plant. That is "genetic modification".

Corn is a great example. Wild ears of corn were about the size of your thumb and only contained a few kernels each. Human modification made them the length of your forearm and packed with kernels. Thats not natural. Thats human modification of the plants genome. She appears to be too stupid to realize it.
