You can find this little fun word game, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications.
The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).
Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated.
PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and any tips you might give the group on how you solve these puzzles as puzzle solvers love to hear how you made out.
You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for todays Cryptogram.
If you need a little help you can copy the cryptogram and paste it to Hals Helper below:
You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper.
THE IN THING NOW IS TO SCROLL DOWN TO MAGNUM44S HELPFUL HINT BEFORE YOU SOLVE THE PUZZLE.
Solution to our last puzzle:
THE ROAD TO EASY STREET IS THROUGH THE SEWER. JOHN MADDEN
Hint for todays CG: The road to solving this, is getting the author first.
1 and 1/2 min. Got the most popular letter and rest became apparent. Author’s name confirmed quote.
I guessed the first word after the comma, DGJ, and after that is was off to the races. Short puzzles are harder, but a lucky guess helps.
More difficult than most. Started with the word after the comma, then the author filled in.
Histograms aren’t reliable with short quotes and I didn’t find assigning the most common letter, N, to the most common letter in written English particularly helpful. Nothing really suggested itself to me. This kind of quote can be difficult, BUT I found it surprisingly easy once I correctly guessed DGJ from context.
The frequency of the first four letters is:
N 7
J 6
H 5
Z 5
There isn’t enough dispersion to make reliable inferences.
Yes, its BONUS time once again. That laughable time when you get to solve a humorous quote from a classic funny movie, comedian, or entertainer. The trick is, unlike nikos puzzle where you dont want to post spoilers, with the BONUS puzzle its a race for first solution posted, BUT you dont post the solution directly, You post a funny pic ,gif, or meme that shows you solved it. First pic or gif wins the prize with full bragging rights. Honorable mentions for all original pic or gif posts.
Ive got stacks of honorable mention awards laying about, so just because someone solves the quote first doesnt mean you cant contribute to the fun.
Dont get wrapped up in how easy or hard it is. Just solve it and post something funny and share the fun.
Todays puzzle should be fun and easy. No knowledge of foreign language skills required. Be creative with your replies 😝
Here it is (with anticipation and drum roll). Ready, set, solve:
L VKE KPANVJZ BLKQ PJJTAP PLCVNQKZJ. L RLEPKIIJE VLT EKYCVNJZ KPE VJ UYTN HKTP'N VKXLPC LN. NVJS QKEJ NVZJJ AG NVATJ QAXLJT. KN TAQJ IALPN SAY VKXJ NA HAPEJZ LG VJ'T UYTN K OKE IKZJPN.-EJKEIAAB
I was stumped a little on this one, four minutes.
Lots of honorable mention material still out there for this one.
Same here. Started with the word after the comma.
Ulysses S. Grant just did not fit as the author’s name so I ignored the author.
Took me two minutes to solve.
Of course I slapped the ‘coward’.
Took me 4 1/2 minutes. I just couldn’t get a handle on it until I remembered what word usually follows a comma.
That went pretty quick. Only certain three letter words tend to follow a comma. And the quote was pretty resonant for me because I just finished watching TROY (2004) again, so...
Willie!
“SH*T, DID I LEAVE THE STOVE ON?”
Both of those were tough for me. About 4 minutes each. Nice choices!
