Arizona and Nevada Face First-Ever Mandatory Water Cuts from the Colorado River

Arizona and Nevada are facing the first-ever mandatory cuts in the amount of water they can take from the Colorado River next year.

The two states are among seven that have agreed to drought contingency plans for the river system that serves about 40 million people and 6,300 square miles of farmland from Wyoming to Southern California.

The cuts are triggered by water levels expected in Lake Mead, a giant reservoir on the river at the Arizona-Nevada border. On Jan. 1, Lake Mead's level is projected to be 1,089.4 feet, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation said late last week. That's just below the drought contingency plan threshold of 1,090 feet, and it means cuts for Arizona and Nevada.

"It’s still energy intensive, but build a couple Gen4 nuke plants and that problem goes away too. Billions in California are wasted on complete bullshit. This could be done in five minutes with competent leadership."

Agreed. Newly emerging small nuke tech can provide local energy in some areas. Since the socialists took over Cali, that won't happen, neither will desalination plants for water. However, they're fine with increasing the welfare roles for all (legal or not) and turning out major cities into toilets.

And no, I can't leave Cali due to family reasons. I was ready to move to Reno years ago, but things change. Plus, there are millions of conservatives here that have jobs and can't just pack up and leave. I'm so sick of people on the Web telling me and others to just leave.

Water usage by millions of illegal aliens in California lead to overdrafting of the Colorado and shorting the Central Arizona Project flows.

80% of California's water usage goes to agricultural irrigation. 12% goes to residential and recreational landscape irrigation (a lot of that Palm Springs golf courses). That leaves 8% that is actual human use--drinking, bathing, sanitation. The percent of illegal aliens in California is usually cited at about 7.5%, but let's round up and say it's 10%. That means illegals consume 0.8% of California water. It's literally a drop in a bucket.

Yes but...who do you think works those fields?

I have repeatedly pointed out to my water district that simply rezoning the big ag operations would remove all their supply problems for the reason you stated: why grow a water intensive crop like strawberries for example when houses on those fields would use far less?

After lots of nervous shuffling of feet it always comes out as “but what will the Mexicans do?”

Modern California is nothing but a host organism for a latent parasite. Brown started the ball rolling back in the early ‘70s by canning any state research into field automation at the insistence of the UFW.

IOW the plan is to retain outdated business models to do one thing....keep Mexico in California

Because there's more money to be made by landowners on strawberries year after year than on a one-time sale for residential development.

Absolutely, But they let radical ideology override practical common sense.

I don’t know when the last time California voters showed common sense. Perhaps when Gray Davis was recalled. But that was a blip. Because they then chose Arnold over McClintock to replace Davis.

I was there in April and the lake appeared to be substantially up from where it was.

Not entitled, they had better pay what’s it worth to get it.

There are other sources of fresh Water in this Country outside of the Great Lakes. Better to use it to help our fellow Citizens than just have it just flow into the Ocean.

Yep, I agree, And that is suicide at their own hands, except now instead of waking up and changing their ways, they are hellbent on taking everyone else out with them.

Only with Williamson Act tax exemptions.

Otherwise...they get taxed out of existence.

Housing crash in Nev and Ariz?

This will support hubby’s repeated mantra....that we can’t look for a retirement or vacation home in AZ or NV, because they’re going to have water shortages (in the dessert).

Geez. I guess I’ll have to look at the mountains of NM :(

Maybe they should consider moving somewhere that has its own water.

There is a half-mile of over-burden (ice) in the Hiawatha crater covering the metal rich asteroid debris, over by the Thule airbase. Lots of glacial drinking water available.

The situation on the lake levels is now reversed. Every time the wind blows hard, the lakefront homes are hit with rollers coming ashore removing their frontage by the water’s edge. The lakes are brimming full for a change.

Oil is a privately owned resource produced for profit. I don’t see anyone “manufacturing” water.

Specious comparison.

Well, they’ve already done in Washoe/Reno/Truckee Meadows and are spreading south in to the Carson Valley. Purty sad. Hey, let’s build a wall. :-)
