Cape Cod’s New Normal: Sharks Are Everywhere
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 17, 2019 | Jon Kamp

During a recent morning surf at a town beach here, Andy Jacob spotted a dark shadow in the water just a few feet away. He assumed it was a gray seal because they are everywhere these days—until he got a better view. “As clear as day, it was a great white shark,” said the 40-year-old Wellfleet resident, who had been surfing around the same spot where a great white killed a boogie boarder last September. He said he warned others nearby and that a lifeguard temporarily ordered people out of the water, standard protocol after a sighting. “Any person could be attacked at any moment,” said Mr. Jacob, an artist and oyster farmer. It is peak shark season on Cape Cod, and this summer, the huge animals lurking just offshore are an inescapable presence to the people on dry land.

Right after I type this I am loading the car with my surf fishing gear and heading to Cape Cod. I might need to stop at a tackle shop to buy stronger reels and heavier line. :) Hilton Head Island markets itself as the Shark Fishing Capital of the World. Cape Cod might be challenging that.

The “sharks” have always been there. Back in the day, they were called “Kennedys”.

In California, white sharks are a protected species and catching or killing them is prohibited.

Back in the day, they were called “Kennedys”.

And before that, around Boston, they were called "Dutch Rudders".

The irrational protection of sea mammals has resulted in the up surge of sea mammal predators. So if the occasional human gets bit or killed just chalk it up to environmental craziness which made the irrational law.

Surfed there for years.

No more.

Very few people in the water there this summer.

Seems kind of strange that they are protected since Moonbeam saved the sea lions. When he did that he rang the dinner bell for Great Whites and they are all over the coast clear into Mexico. But not as much north as they don’t like cold water a lot and it gets colder the closer to Alaska.

They definitely need some Inuit people there...

Maybe some Japanese.

And whoever else likes to eat seal blubber.

Does seal meat taste like... chicken?

killer whales hunt the great whites - there has been a war on for the last couple of years I’ve heard mention of here and there. It seems as though the killer whales are chasing the sharks around the globe killing them off. Maybe the sharks have found a bit of a hide out from the whales.
