In many states you only need a license plate in the back, and by parking backwards you avoid police camera scans that reveal suspensions, expirations, warrants, etc.

"Why do between about 1 in 5 and 1 in 10 people insist on parking backwards" Hmmm... Seriously question the stats... First correct step would be to determine how many vehicles have the front seat installed backwards... Then, a simple count of those people who have such a car would be more representative of the problem...

In my industry its a requirement. The thought process is that you are more perceptive and not tired when you arrive vs when youve worked all day or night.

I park backwards all the time. My car’s rear visibility is far worse than forward, and as I age it gets much harder to do a full head check looking over my shoulder. I am much more likely to hit someone or get into an accident backing out of a parking space than driving forward out of a parking space where I have a clear unobstructed 270 degree view.
Also, when I back into a space, I know what is there and I know it can’t suddenly move into my path. I can’t guarantee that when I back out of a space.
I back into spaces for safety. Simple as that. I don’t know why it bothers you.

I say it's much more prevalent nowadays with backup cams in most new cars. Hey I got a backup cam so I gotta use it.
I hate it in strip malls where the parking lots are small, drives me crazy waiting and waiting while they try. Saw a guy over the weekend back into a spot in a large parking lot where he could have pulled through and parked nose out on the other side...but nooooo, he had so show off his skillz. Irritating, but that's life..don't sweat the small stuff

Obviously, you have never been trained to “combat park.”

Combat parking, it’s easier to leave suddenly if necessary.
Try it just once, I guarantee you won’t go back!

It's a habit amongst firefighters. A lot of other first responders, too. When you get the call, you go. Nose out parking is preferable as it facilitates a quicker response time and the possibility of saving a life or property.
Don't care if it upsets you.

Guess youre not military or a vet. Its called tactical parking so you can get out of Dodge in a hurry.
To: dangus
Sorry it aggravates you but I do it for safety reasons. It is extremely common and scary to see pedestrians who suddenly appear from behind a car or truck parked next to you just as you are beginning to back out, particularly if they are excited kids or if they are pushing a cart in front of them.
BTW, I back in almost always and am good at it, one and done, even though I am a woman. You shouldn’t hold up traffic if you can’t do it but if you can do it the delay isn’t more than a few seconds longer than a front-in park.
