<”If I recall correctly, Intercourse, PA is a few miles from Blue Ball, PA.”>

Yes. And you could buy a t-shirt that said: “I lost my virginity between Blue Ball and Intercourse, Pa.”

There is also Kutztown, PA, near Reading, PA. In Pennsylvania “Dutch” the word “kutz” means vomit. Better yet, in the Harrisburg, PA primaries recently, two men with the surname Kutz were running for offices. One of them was Thomas Kutz. I forget the other’s name. I saw their signs around the area. Haven’t heard how they came out in the election.

Here are a few more I’ve seen...

Cut and Shoot, Texas, went to a flea market there.

Plano, Texas...who lives there? Plano rednecks of course...just threw that one in for fun...

And poking around on an online map I see...

Coyote Flats, Texas (southwest of Dallas)
Gun Barrel City, Texas (southeast of Dallas)
Early, Texas (wonder what they say if you show up late for work?)

And in Louisiana...(looking at the city index on a map)

Acme (makes me think of all those Roadrunner cartoons...)
Arizona
Belcher I wonder if that one was named just after dinner...URRRP ...’scuse me...hey I know what to name our town!!
Coon
Cooter Point - Not sure I want to know what a cooter is...
Jesuit Bend
Pumpkin Center
Shongaloo
Transylvania

In south Louisiana Cajun country some of the names are not pronounced as they are spelled...

Saint Amant (town outside Baton Rouge). Not what you would think, more as if it were one word, “San-ama”...San, as in sand, not Saint, as you would think, and ama - the “ma” part sounds like “mom” without the last M. Not sure how to spell it phonetically. Kind of like “Cinema” but with a short A instead of the I...sanama...

Oddly enough, most of the other “Saint” towns are pronounced like the word “saint” as usual...

Saint Bernard
Saint Tammany
Saint Gabriel
Saint James...and so on.

Natchitoches - Nak’-o-tish. Emphasis on first syllable.
Thibodaux - Tib’-a-doe
Yscloskey - I have no idea, never been there. Town I spotted on a map...

Some of these towns you have to be familiar with the Cajun dialects to have a clue how they are pronounced. I know about Saint Amant because I lived very close to there for a few years. (Denham Springs, Gonzales, Prairieville areas just outside Baton Rouge.)

Lafourche is another example, it’s a Bayou in the area, Bayou Lafourche...pronounced La-foosh’...emphasis on 2nd syllable. Also usually written like that, Bayou is first, not 2nd as in Red River or Mississippi River. Bayou Manchac (Man’-shak) is one of the places I could get crawfish.

Interesting place. In some cases the Cajun accent and dialect are so strong you can barely understand the person speaking. Tough sometimes when you walk into a store and have to ask a question...HUH???

Zwolle - (za-woll’-ee) not far from here, has signs up that say Tamale capitol of the world. Well, not far as the crow flies, a bit over 50 miles, once you get to a bridge over Toledo Bend, it’s a 2+ hour drive...and when we tried to get some tamales, every tamale stand in town was closed...Sunday...and I can’t see making a 2 to 2 1/2 hour drive for 5 bucks worth of tamales...kinda like driving an hour to save 2 bucks on groceries...you spend 15 bucks on gas...

weird...

Thanks!

I have been pronouncing it wrong for years!!

I was taught it was: Ziz-ix (rhyming with Fizz-ix)

The Park ranger pronounced it: 'zigh' 'zix'(rhyming with: sigh-six

Cooter is a turtle.

When I was young everyone called the trunk of a car, the “cooter hull”.
