I agree. I don’t believe there’s ever been an actual ammonite shell discovered, only their fossilized remains.


Exactly! Since fossilization in stone normally replaces a creature’s organic remains with other minerals over time, they only show a shadow of the creature. Fossils in amber seem to not suffer from this process.

More like calamari - ammonites were basically a squid inside of a coiled shell (kind of like the still-living Nautilus).

I found bucket loads of ammonites in the dry bed of Benbrook Lake during that bad drought we had a few years ago.
