MOTHERS DAY: Songs That Celebrate Being A Bum

Posted on 05/12/2019 9:21:13 AM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

Can't help it guys. The songs are out there. Kingston Trios "Greenback Dollar". Millers "King of the Road" On this Mother's day I don't think the women in their lives would be proud of them. They're not good enough to turn good women into moms and the best that can be said is that they are totally free. The Sit-in' on the Dock of The Bay fella probably needed a bath too. Did these guys have bad mamas?

Can't think of other songs.

Big Rock Candy Mountain

One evening as the sun went down
And the jungle fire was burning
Down the track came a hobo hikin'
And he said, "Boys, I'm not turning
I'm headed for a land that's far away
Besides the crystal fountains
So come with me, we'll go and see
The Big Rock Candy Mountains."

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
There's a land that's fair and bright
Where the handouts grow on bushes
And you sleep out every night
Where the boxcars all are empty
And the sun shines everyday
All the birds and the bees
And the cigarette trees
The lemonade springs
Where the bluebird sings
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
All the cops have wooden legs
And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth
And the hens lay soft-boiled eggs
The farmers' trees are full of fruit
And the barns are full of hay
Oh, I'm bound to go
Where there ain't no snow
Where the rain don't fall
The wind don't blow
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains

A Boy Named Sue probably qualifies. She married (or hooked up with) that loser who knew he would never be around to raise Johnny “Sue” Cash - then didn’t object or override his desire to name a boy “Sue” back in those pre-enlightened days. She probably was drunk to allow that to happen.

Allman Brothers - Ramblin’ Man

He was born in the back seat of a Greyhound bus, rolling down Highway 41.

Hallelujah! I'm A Bum

(Chorus)
Hallelujah! I'm a bum, Hallelujah bum again
Hallelujah! give us a handout and revive us again

I went to a house and I knocked on the door
A lady says, " Bum, bum, you been here before"

I went to a house, and I asked for some bread
A lady says, " Bum, bum, the baker is dead"

Oh why dont you work like other folk do
How the hell can I work when there's no work to do

Oh why don't you work like other folks do
How can I get a job when you're holding down two

Oh, I love my boss and my boss loves me
And that is the reason I'm so hungry

Oh why don't you save all the money you earn
Well if I didn't eat, I'd have money to burn

Oh, I like my boss, he's a good friend of mine
And that's why I'm starving out in the breadline

Whenever I get all the money I earn
The boss will be broke and to work he must turn

(Final chorus)
Hallelujah! I'm a bum, Hallelujah bum again
Hallelujah! give us sixpence for Christ's sake Amen

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun.
It’s been the ruin of many a poor boy.
And God, I know I’m one.

(I posted these words *before* I looked up the lyrics.)

The original version of Rogers and Hart ‘The Lady is a Tramp’ is about tramp = hobo, not the more modern usage of ‘tramp’.

Then there’s the slippery slope of encouraging laziness. Think John Lennon’s “Imagine”.
