Subject: WH Travel Pool Report 1 — AF1 Departure

Verizon Media team pool coverage continues from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, on a cool, late-March-like-but-actually-it’s-mid-May morning.

Marine 1 touched down and came to a stop in front of the plane at 1141 and President Trump stepped out shortly afterward to walk to the moveable stairs at the forward door. He waved to the travel pool waiting ahead of the port wing but did not come to take questions.

Boarding the plane with Trump were Sarah Sanders and Dan Scavino.

Today’s agenda is a visit to a liquefied natural gas plant in Hackberry, Louisiana, followed by a fundraiser at a private residence in Metairie, a New Orleans suburb, this evening.

Pool will pass along any information about the fundraiser it receives or can deduce.

Note: We have been informed that there is no wifi at either location, so pool’s ability to transmit timely updates will depend on cell coverage.

Additional note: “Remarks on Promoting Energy Infrastructure and Economic Growth” from Hackberry are scheduled to be livestreamed on the White House web site at 1510 EDT (1410 local).

The president and traveling entourage are using the larger Air Force 1 today, the modified Boeing 747, tail number 29000.

The flight to Lake Charles will take approximately 2 hours, 40 minutes and we should be aloft shortly.

Subject: WH Travel Pool Report 2 — Lake Charles arrival

Air Force 1 set down at Chennault International Airport in Lake Charles, Louisiana at 1309 CDT after a 2 hour and 16 minute flight.

The president emerged from the plane and came down the stairs 12 minutes later and, after shaking hands with greeters at the base of the steps, walked about 50 yards to a pen where several dozen supporters waited cheering and clapping. He shook hands and took selfies for about 10 minutes.

Pool was urged on vans and at 1331, the motorcade is en route to Hackberry, about a half-hour drive away.

The flight itself was uneventful. A brief visit from Sarah Sanders early in the trip, and from Rep. Steve Scalise, who flew with Trump, late in the flight. Scalise talked up the LNG facility Trump was to tour. Sanders came to say hello.

In response to co-pooler Francesca Chambers’s question about the importance of selling LNG to Europe, Scalise said:

“When Russia sells energy to other countries, they usually attach political strings to that energy. And it’s usually things that go against our western civilization values, our democratic values.

“And the fact that we can now sell American energy to our allies around the world, and they can break their links with Russia, they don’t have to buy Russian energy, it not only helps our economy, but it helps geopolitically, So that they no longer have to take those strings that were attached from Russia.”

Others in the Louisiana congressional delegation also aboard, per Sanders: Johnson, Cassidy, Kennedy.

Tarmac greeters, per the White House:

Representative Ralph Abraham

United States Representative from Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District and Candidate for Governor of Louisiana

Representative Garret Graves

United States Representative from Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District

Representative Clay Higgins

United States Representative from Louisiana’s 3rd Congressional District

Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser

Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana

Attorney General Jeff Landry

Attorney General of Louisiana

Commissioner Michael Strain

Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry

Of minor note, at 1300 as the plane was in its descent into Lake Charles, the television all switched to CNN from their normal Fox News.

Subject: WH Travel Pool Report 4 — Hackberry arrival
The presidential motorcade arrived at Sempra Energy’s Cameron LNG Export Terminal at 1410 after a 39-minute drive.
The 31-mile trip, both on I-10 and surface roads, had clusters of supporters waving, holding signs, taking photos. In all there were many hundreds, at least, possibly as many as a couple of thousand. Pool did not see any signs opposing Trump.
The president is take a tour of the new facility where natural gas arriving by pipeline is compressed into liquefied natural gas for storage and shipment overseas.
Following the tour he is to give remarks which, as noted, will be carried on the White House web site.

Four motorcycle police officers were involved in an accident as the motorcade left the airport, per the WH.

No serious injuries, again, per the White House.

Subject: WH Travel Pool 7 — Return to Lake Charles Airport

The motorcade arrived back at Chennault airport in Lake Charles at 1601, again passing numerous clusters of supporters, although there seemed to be fewer than on the outbound trip.

The president was climbing aboard the plane by the time the press vans stopped. Pool was hurried aboard.

Next stop: Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Kenner.

Subject: WH Travel Pool Report 8 — New Orleans Arrival

Air Force 1 landed at Louis Armstrong New Orleans airport at 1644 after a quick, 30-minute flight.
The president stepped out the forward door 13 minutes later. He again walked over to his gathered supporters some 50 yards away and shook hands and signed various objects, including one woman’s arm. After nine minutes, he walked a few steps to his limousine and climbed in.
At 1706, The motorcade is rolling toward Metairie and a Trump campaign-RNC joint fundraiser. It is closed press.
During the flight, the US ambassador to the EU, Gordon Sondland, and the vice president of the European Commission for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic, came aft to speak to the pool briefly.
Sondland said that Russia currently had a strangehold on natural gas supplies to Western Europe, but thanks to new LNG facilities such as the one Trump just visited: “This is the beginning of the end of that stranglehold.”
Sefcovic said that EU nations already import some 450 million cubic meters of LNG from the United States, accounting for 35 percent of US LNG exports, but would be able to import much more soon. He said new LNG terminals are being built in Croatia and Greece, and existing ones in Lithuania and Poland are being expanded. A new one in Germany may also be built, he said. From the White House:

Secretary Kyle Ardoin
Secretary of State of Louisiana

State Senator Sharon Hewitt
State Senator from Louisiana’s 1st Senate District

State Representative Jack McFarland
State Representative from Louisiana’s 13th House District

State Representative Blake Miguez
State Representative from Louisiana’s 49th House District

State Representative Paula Davis
State Representative from Louisiana’s 69th House District

Greeters at the airport, per the White House:

Subject: WH Travel Pool Report 9

The motorcade arrived in Metairie at 1729, in front of a rather large mansion-type home in a neighborhood called Metairie Club Gardens.
The drive was uneventful, and the roads, including the small residential ones near the site, were lined with clusters of supporters waving flags, holding signs, etc. Again, pool did not see any signs critical of the president.
Pool was led into a room above one of the garages – a garage commandeered at the moment by caterers – to wait until Trump leaves.
Pool has not been given any information about this fundraiser. However, according to reporting by The Advocate, the minimum ticket price was $2,800 – the maximum individual contribution to a federal candidate per election this cycle – while those donating $100,000 to Trump and the Republican Party would receive “roundtable” access. Couples paying $35,000 would get a photo with Trump.
An invitation obtained by the Advocate said the hosts are shipbuilder Boysie Bollinger and developer Joe Canizaro.
Pool will provide more information if and as it comes available.

Pool has asked the WH, the campaign, and the RNC for details regarding the fundraiser. Will report if there is a response.

TV pooler Meredith McGraw, from ABC, reports that the RNC says, on background, that the event is expected to raise $4 million from 225 attendees.

For those interested, the address is 500 Northline Street, Metairie. The home is quite large, stone and what appears to be stucco exterior.

According to Jefferson Parish property records say that it is owned by Joseph C. Canizaro and has an assessed value of $481,500.

Subject: WH Travel Pool Report 10 – Fundraiser departure

Pool was led from their garage-top hold room back into the press vans at 1900. No POTUS sighting during the event. No overheard snippets from remarks (apart from that of the caterers working in the garage).

At 1909, we are on the road toward the airport.
One corrective from report 9a: The proper spelling for ABC’s TV pooler is Meridith McGraw. Your pool regrets the error.

Subject: WH Travel Pool Report 11

The presidential motorcade made its way out of Old Metairie, back onto the closed-off I-10 and back to the New Orleans airport for the flight back to Andrews.
POTUS was already halfway up the forward stairs as the rear of the motorcade came to a halt at 1931, and the pool similarly is climbing aboard.
One fundraiser note: the RNC confirms previous reporting regarding the scope of the event:
“Fundraiser for the joint Trump Victory committee
Format: Roundtable and dinner
Expected amount to be raised: $4M
Expected number of attendees: 225”
The flight home should take just over two hours.

Subject: WH Travel Pool Report 12 — JBA arrival

Air Force set down at Joint Base Andrews at 2223 after 1 hour and 50 minutes in the air.

Sarah Sanders came to the aft near the end of the flight with Rep. Steve Scalise for a brief chat about the New Orleans basketball team winning some draft lottery.

Trump stepped out of the forward door and came down the stairs, walking directly to the Marine 1 helicopter parked some yards ahead of the nose.

He saluted the Marine at the door, climbed aboard, and the helicopter was aloft at 2250, en route to the White House.

Handing off to my capable Verizon Media colleague for the president’s South Lawn arrival.

Good night, all.

Subject: In Town Pool Report #3 -Travel/Photo lid

Marine One landed on the South Lawn at 11:00 pm.

President Trump disembarked three minutes later and walked into the White House. He waved at reporters but ignored questions about his trip to Louisiana, his son Don Jr. agreeing to testify, and a question about whether the “situation in Iran is different than Iraq in 2003.

Trump was followed by several people after the flood lights turned out. Your pooler could not see their faces in the darkness.

The White House called a travel/photo lid at 11:05 pm.

It’s not kindness, I think it would be an interesting story.

The liberals I worked with in CA thought it would be a good idea to write some of my stories. I didn’t, but I know the reception wouldn’t be as planned. :-)
