The family of Tom Seaver announced Thursday that the Hall of Fame pitcher was recently diagnosed with dementia and is retiring from public life.
According to the statement, released through the Baseball Hall of Fame, Seaver will continue work in his vineyard in Calistoga in California's wine country. According to MLB.com New York Mets beat writer Anthony DiComo, the team was hoping Seaver could attend a 50th anniversary celebration of the 1969 Miracle Mets but confirmed that in light of Thursday's news, he will not.
"We've been in contact with the Seaver family and are aware of his health situation," Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said in a statement. "Although he's unable to attend the '69 Anniversary, we are planning to honor him in special ways and have included his family in our plans."

Perhaps no single player is identified more with one team than The Franchise Tom Seaver is with the New York Mets. Seaver helped turn the Mets from loveable losers into formidable foes. Hall of Fame outfielder and Mets broadcaster Ralph Kiner recalled Tom Seaver was the driving force behind the players, always pushing the team to be better than they were, never letting them settle.
In 1969, the Mets captured their first World Series championship behind the powerful right arm of Tom Terrific. Seaver took home his first National League Cy Young Award that year, leading the major leagues in victories with 25, which accounted for one quarter of the Mets wins.
Enjoyed many an afternoon watching Seaver pitch back when I was a kid and enjoyed baseball.
Sorry to heard of his condition but if one lives long enough, one can expect a diminishing state of mind. Our family have many generations of this disease.
Prayers for him and his family.
A contract dispute with the owner.
From Wiki:
In 1991, Seaver was diagnosed with Lyme disease, which caused Bell’s palsy. In 2012, after a period of lying dormant in his system, the disease reoccurred. He suffered from loss of memory not even remembering long term acquaintances; “sleep disorder, nausea, and a general overall feeling of chemical imbalance.” In January 2013, Seaver was diagnosed with Stage 3 of the disease. As of that July, after a treatment regimen of mostly vitamins, Seaver was feeling much better. According to former teammate Bud Harrelson, Seaver has “some short term memory loss, but is otherwise doing well.”
On March 7, 2019, Seaver’s family announced that he is suffering from dementia and will retire from public life.
Really bad Mets management.

Loved him as well, great pitcher. They used to say he wasn’t very nice to fans. But whatever.
Sorry to hear that. It strips your past life from you while you’re still alive.
There are things you can do to mitigate it but there is no silver bullet. Lots of social interaction, reading/writing/studying and limiting “push” technology like TV. You don’t want the brain to atrophy.
I was 8 and a huge Mets fan. That was a horrible night. The media dubbed it the “Friday night massacre”.
Horrible, horrible disease and it strikes so many of the best people like the late Pat Summit, Charlton Heston, and Ronald Reagan. Prayers up.
Yesterday I saw my BIL for the first in a couple of years. He must be around 85. I don’t know if it is alzheimers or not but it is shocking how fast he has gone down.
I almost didn’t recognize him. It was really sad when he told me I looked just like a guy. That guy was me. My sister is much better off.
