Stop Calling Him 'Dr.': The Academic Fraud of Sebastian Gorka, Trump’s Terrorism 'Expert'
Haaretz ^ | Andrew Reynolds

Posted on 02/26/2019 10:31:00 AM PST by SeekAndFind

Early on a mustache-twirling villain emerged as the face of the Trump White House. With the mannerisms of a pompous English B-movie baddy, Sebastian Gorka is to Donald Trump what the Sheriff of Nottingham was to King John. The malevolent sidekick.

Dr. Gorka styles himself as the crusading academic. A Kissinger for our troubled times. The brilliant scholar of terrorism who has taught at elite colleges and published groundbreaking research. He often reminds the imbeciles of the press that as a man of great learning only he truly comprehends the threat of Muslims.

But experts have listened to Gorka’s advocacy of the Muslim ban, attacks on the media and sterling defence of Trump’s “well-oiled’ administration and wondered how could such a well trained academic make such baseless and ignorant claims about topics he purports to be an expert on? In March he became embroiled in a remarkable spat with a Republican National Security consultant, Michael S. Smith. Gorka is flailing widely – tilting at enemies real and imagined.

I started digging and it didn’t take long to find out that Gorka is a fraud – a charlatan of the most brazen hue – a snake-oil salesman whose supposed Ph.D dissertation would have never passed muster in America or Britain and to put the cherry on the cake was approved by an fraudulent panel of examiners. The polar opposite of Lt. Gen H.R. McMasters’ celebrated dissertation awarded by UNC Chapel Hill.

Gorka is Hungarian-English. He gained an American passport in 2012. His nationalist parents fled to London from Budapest in 1956. His dissertation – Content and End-State-based Alteration in the Practice of Political Violence since the End of the Cold War: the difference between the terrorism of the Cold War and the terrorism of al Qaeda

9 May 2017: The Federalist: Attack Sebastian Gorka’s Ideas, Not His Credentials Or Person
By Kevin Stuart
(Kevin E. Stuart is the executive director of the Austin Institute. He received his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin, where he studied public law and political philosophy, a master of sciences from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and was a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge)

A little online digging was all it took to show Reynolds’s assertions to be unsubstantiated. The search began at Corvinus University of Budapest’s library, Gorka’s alma mater, where online versions of both his dissertation and a shorter summary are available. Reynolds directs much of his criticism at the qualification of external reviewers listed in the summary, and he assumes they were the only reviewers.

But why assume that? Labeling them “external” already implies they’re not the only reviewers and, indeed, a current university policy document requires a committee with internal members, external members, and a public defense. Reynolds would need to know the exact composition of the committee to reach his conclusion, and he offers no evidence of such knowledge. It seems to me before you try to destroy a man’s career, this is the sort of detail you make sure you get right...

Gorka’s dissertation document is 240 pages total, with 264 footnotes in 195 pages of the main text, all fairly standard. His superviser, Lánczi András, is a professor at Corvinus University, head (rektora in Hungarian) of the Political Science Institute, and a former Fulbright research grant recipient in the United States. Those are standard, even impressive, credentials and certainly pass the initial smell test.

There was also a second adviser, professor Stephen Sloan, who is a distinguished fellow for the Global Perspective Office at the University of Central Florida (UCF) where he was previously Lawrence J. Chastang Distinguished Professor of Terrorism Studies. Sloan’s PhD is in comparative politics from New York University (NYU), a university of considerable prestige.
Gorka’s dissertation identifies Sloan’s affiliation as Temple University, also a top research university. Around the time Gorka completed his dissertation, a press release from Syracuse University identified Sloan as “a terrorism expert from the University of Central Florida and Temple University,” so nothing appears to be amiss there, either...

Either Reynolds has blundered rather embarrassingly, or (much more likely) this is a mendacious ideological attack—and a sloppy one at that...

Thank goodness Bibi would never allow it.

After the elections Bibi may not be in power - or if he is, he could be severely weakened Lukud is not as strong as it was previously. So the Peace Plan could be in the hands of someone else like one of the many suicidal Israeli leaders.

Wrong !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't really believe that Boston University is a better school than Boston College, especially in economics and finance, do you?

The fact that they are both in MA is two strikes against them, which means I don't care much for either one {although Boston College has a beautiful campus with cathedral like buildings} Boston University is more like Newark, NJ or the upstate NY prison, Sing Sing.

Aww, did I offend you? God, you sound like a liberal: “...slander a great (though very liberal) school.” That is a classic contradiction in terms.

My apologies to Boston COLLEGE and all the great people of the Peoples’ Republic of Massachussets.

By the way, the actual ranking difference between Boston College and Boston University is FOUR (4) positions; not exactly statistically significant.

Boston College is a private institution that was founded in 1863. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 9,358, its setting is suburban, and the campus size is 338 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Boston College’s ranking in the 2019 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, 38.

Boston University has a total undergraduate enrollment of 18,080, its setting is urban, and the campus size is 134 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Boston University’s ranking in the 2019 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, 42. Its tuition and fees are $53,948 (US News & World Report, 2018-19).

What was it you said about slandering a great school...?

I hear ya. My knees are shot.

We transitioned from downhill to X-C, only to save money [when the kids were young]. No long lines, expensive lift tickets, crowds ...and you can X-C almost anywhere.

Also snowshoeing has become the *rage*. Great fun. Great workout.

We’re trying to maintain our conservative roots as best we can. Coming from the endless spenders in Connecticut, to the fiscally responsible small town Vermonters is a delight. Budgets are small. And tight. Our little village of 1,000 has no debt. It is quite wonderful to see.

Of course, we have no amenities, like in CT, multi-million dollar boat houses, fancy senior centers, a multitude of police officers tripping over themselves ... We love it.

When he’s on television, Gorka speaks as though his political views match those of American patriots.

So he’s either a pro-American pundit or he’s something else. In the political world, it’s impossible to tell the difference based on the words coming out of a person’s mouth.

What exactly was the reason his job at the White House was terminated? I don’t remember at the moment.

Does one have to have a Ph.D. to be right about an issue?

That's the bottom line isn't it?

I noticed he didn't attack Gorka's take on Islam by showing why Gorka is wrong. - Tom

Jared and Ivanka pushed him out. He and Bannon were pushed out about the same time.

The US Defense Department didn’t seem to have a problem with his credentials.
