One of the classes that was required at the Naval Academy was boxing. Now, this was something that I had always avoided whenever I could because I wore glasses ... over 20/200 (corrected to 20/20 with the glasses). I can't see clearly beyond my elbow on an outstretched arm without my glasses.

Anyway, the first time that I got into the ring, they basically had to lead me in. At the bell, I went out, looking for anything clear enough to hit ... took a punch to the right side of my jaw, spinning me around. When I shook me head clear, I saw my opponent in front of me and started punching as I had been taught on the bag. I kept throwing punches and making clean connections with my target. Miraculously, I took no punches in return ...

Then the referee stepped up to me and stopped me, handing me my glasses back.

I had spent the minutes since I took the first punch attacking the turnbuckles in the corner of the ring ... and those a$$holes had just let me go on doing it while they stood and watched ...

After that, they allowed me a spotter in my corner who kept calling out the direction of my opponent using the 12 o'clock method.

I got creamed most of the time, but at least was able to hit my opponent several times ...
