While Congress has yet to pass a budget, the Trump administration has drawn how it would like to see the federal government "reshaped," and most anticipate that reductions in force (RIFs) will be a part of this shape shifting. Congress is supposed to pass a budget resolution by April 15, although it's better known for passing continuing resolutions instead of meeting deadlines, and the budget at issue is for the fiscal year beginning on October 1. So, there is time before the RIF tsunami strikes, but like with any threatening forecast, preparation is key.
First and foremost, this is a good time to assess whether you want to stay in the government. From the RIFs that occurred in prior decades, we know that incentives for early retirement tend to be more cost effective than executing the demotions and terminations that come with RIFs, so it is expected that several agencies, especially those prominently featured on the chopping block like the EPA and the State Department, will obtain Voluntary Early Retirement Authorization (VERA).
To be eligible for an early out, an employee must have 20 years of service and have reached the age of 50, or have 25 years of service regardless of age. Along with VERA, agencies typically also offer a buyout, officially called a Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment (VSIP), of $25,000, although DoD obtained authorization to offer $40,000. These lump sum payments are taxable, so plan accordingly if this route appeals to you.

If the shutdown drags on, its a good time to reduce the size of the federal government.
Get to it.
Where, oh where, will all the affirmative-actioned federal employees find real jobs?
It is RACIST to expect them to find non-affirmative-action jobs!
You know folks, all the people who like to trash Trump, just aren’t firing on all cylinders. This guy gets it, and gets it in ways some never imagined.
DRAIN THE SWAMP!!!!!
This aspect of governing has alluded our great president. It is time to massively reduce spending before it is too late. The disappearance of 800,000 bureaucrats has gone unnoticed by the American people. Tsa can easily be replaced with armed marines (m paid already!!)on every flight and bomb sniffing dogs. We are spending into oblivion and Trump has been sadly missing in this economic suicide. Slash spending now!!
RIF is very necessary at this time.
Our supreme leadership RIF’d a fair amount of people in my company world-wide just before Christmas.
It was deemed “necessary” as well.
I’m surprised and thankful I didn’t get the chop.
Awesome.
I’ll believe it when I see it.
I’d trust and much prefer the Marines instead of the TSA.
MP, MA, or AP’s could take over. Guard and reserve types could do weekends and the two weeks stuff.
I hear there are plenty of open jobs I the private sector, if you have the skills. After a ‘career’ in government that might be a problem. The private sector usually expects you to earn your keep.
I love this plan.
Hes might as well be a Freeper. Its like hearing my thoughts coming out of the Presidents mouth.
You link isn’t working or they pulled it...
.
[Where, oh where, will all the affirmative-actioned federal employees find real jobs?]
Blacks make-up less than 10% of the private workforce, but over 20% of the government workforce... Just sayin’.
Two birds with one stone?
