Scam/Vanity

Posted on 12/08/2018 11:22:23 AM PST by Allen In Texas Hill Country

My wife has had Humana for several years and we're both quite satisfied with the service they provide her. And this is not an advertisement for them. Yesterday she got a package with a return label of VRI in Sullivan, Il. I opened it up and inside there was a letter and a USPS return packet with the address label going to Valued Relationships Inc. in Sullivan Il.

The one sheet letter said that her PERS service was ending and that the unit was to be returned. PERS stands for Personal Emergency Reponse System. Its the unit you wear and senses when there is a fall or something and it alerts someone.

Now I cannot overstate, I repeat overstate the professionalism and meticulous detail of both sides of this letter. It had pictures of the unit, telephone numbers to call for any questions, language translation and grievance complaints. All boxed in with Humana this and that.

The wife called one of the numbers on the paper. They said that she had to return the unit and that VRI would replace it. The wife then said she was going to call the number on her Humana card and they hung up. She did call Humana and was told it is a scam. Wow, what an extensive scam for a little PERS unit. I wonder how much the USPS Priority Mail packet cost? Wait a minute, how much is one these units worth? Don't care, I'm going to keep all this material for a month or two just out of curiosity.

A non-working unit wouldn’t cost the scammer much.

Why buy/make your own when you can get folks to send you their units from other companies? What a deal!!

I got the weakest scam call earlier this week. This guy needs a semester abroad in Nigeria!

Me: hello.

Scammer: hello, congratulations, this is contest management inc (something like that) you’re a finalist in the grand prize of $20,000 or [some brand new car]!

Me: is this the radio station?

Scammer: (still on his prattle)... no but....

Me: is this for the Disneyland tickets?

Scammer: (prattling) ... no, but...

Me: that was the only contest I’ve entered in years.

Scammer: well, probably someone else entered in your name! You are one of our very few finalists! Let’s go over all your information, shall we?

Me: So did I win anything, actually?

Scammer: you are making this way harder than it has to be! Let’s just give your prize to the next runner up. [hangs up]

Seriously, he is the lightest touch, loser scammer I’ve ever seen.

I got mine in 1981 along with a set of pots and pans. Up to that time I'd made do with grocery store and gas station give aways. Boy! What a difference quality makes in the kitchen. You and I bought ours, but it is much nicer to have Cutco given! (chuckle) The fact that they never go dull or wear out does take the sting out of the price, but you have to wait for those benefits. Yes, they are much nicer to receive as gifts!

Merry Christmas.

"She did call Humana and was told it is a scam."

Makes you wonder why Humana didn't contact customers who use this unit, to let them know about the scam.

Also, you might want to take the packaging to your USPS office, and report it to them as postal fraud.

Thank you for posting that.

Not being the kind of person who would do something like that, I don’t think that way and would not expect it.

It’s good to always keep on your guard. I sent it on to some family members and friends.

Why?

Why give someone a free one that they can resell later?

"4. PURSE IN THE GROCERY CART SCAM"

Having spent 25 years in uniform working in New York State's prison system, and being a female who carries a purse, I used to approach women who left their purses sitting wide open in the child's seat of their carts while off checking out some item. I'd explain to them my background, and that they were leaving themselves vulnerable to being a victim of crime. After a while, I got tired of being looked at like I was the criminal, and decided they could all go to hell. Some people are just plain stupid, and don't want sound advice.

Just like some scammer will call saying they’re from your bank wanting verify information. They want you to tell them your personal stuff. Of the several times I had a call I simply told them, well you supposedly have it in front of you so read it back to me. Same with those IRS scams. On the bank calls I just tell them I’ll call back using the number on my card. They hang up. “Unknown Caller” showing up on your phone caller ID clues you in right there.

I called the bank's number once about some issue with an account, and the person there really screwed up.

She asked for my account number.

Now, I don't remember exactly what this was about, IIRC it was some screw up by the bank and I was ticked to start with.

Anyways, when she asked for my account number, I came down on her hard. I I said, *Oh no! When we opened our account with the bank, they told me that they would never ask us for our account number.*

Boy did she backpedal quickly.

I like the calls I get saying that there’s been a problem detected with my Microsoft product, when I use only Apple products. These days, I only accept calls from people in my phone contacts. Anyone else gets blocked as soon as they attempt to call me, on both my cell phone, and landline.

Good! Whenever I get a call I asked them to tell Me to read off their monitor what my information is.

Yeah, they call my CELL phone to tell me there’s a problem with my computer.

Not a landline that the computer may be using dial up for.

They hung up really quick when I pointed out that they did not even know who they called or what my computer was.

A friend received a phone call form the "IRS" last week. She was told she would go to jail if she didn't pay the back taxes immediately. She told them, that since she was going to go to jail anyway as she didn't have the money, could they send her to jail in Florida where it is warm.

They said she could make payments. She said she had no money because her husband left, the house was foreclosed, her car repossessed and she just lost her job. She laid it on thick. Again she asked could they please send her to jail in Florida or southern California. It's just too cold here. They hung up when she asked how she could get benefits.

Here’s a new one!
My daughter is looking for a job and got a call to be this guys personal assistant. Her start pay is $600 a week. The guys sent a check for $6000 and told her to deposit it in her account and then to go buy toys with the remaning 5400. I smelled scam immeaditly. I told her not to deposit the check and we turned it over to the postal inspector.

Interesting.

Was she ever interviewed by an agency for this type of job?

Wonder what exactly what the scam was/how it worked?
