Breathtaking view of the lander hardware.

Is that what it is? I thought it was a Martian sewage treatment plant.

“Is that what it is? I thought it was a Martian sewage treatment plant.”

I shouldn’t make fun of it, there’s probably a few million bucks worth of handmade equipment in that shot.

why do they always land where there’s NOTHING?

It’s like sending a lander to the middle of the Sahara desert to learn about earth.

Go to where the FACE is in Cydona for keeripes sake

My thoughts also. If the universe is "finely tuned for life", why are there no photos of Dejah Thoris hosting a picnic alongside the canal? Or of tharks in single combat to the death?

The universe of science fiction was finely tuned for life. Ours, rather less so.

Yes, for $828 million, they could have done better!

If one would take a few minutes to actually read about the mission, this flat desolate location, with few rocks, hills etc, was intentionally targeted to meet the mission requirements. The location is so flat they landed the craft with only about 2 degrees off from being level, which was also critical to the mission.

It’s a symbol of American superiority and a lot more valuable than the fortune we spend on illegal aliens.

I still remember when we, as kids, were taught about the canals and life on Mars. Newspapers speculated about who made them, and what the inhabitants looked like.

Now they would not lie about such a thing. So, were are they?

Not west Texas, not a Whataburger...

If the universe is "finely tuned for life"

The Universe IS finely tuned for life.

One tiny, tiny change in G, or hbar, or c or half a dozen other constants and we couldn't possibly exist. There'd be no carbon, or no protons, or nothing but radiation, or a universe that lasted only a few hundred years.

The Anthropic principle doesn't mean that the entire Universe is livable.

It means that the universal constants are such that life can exist. Somewhere.

By the way, they've obtained thousands of images of the surface which are far from flat or unvaried. But this mission needed flat, sandy and as rock free as possible.

sometimes such stark pictures/vistas have the ability to trigger a poignancy in the viewer.

I’m a man, I can’t get poignant.

In the very FIRST winter of the Mass. Bay Colony:

50% of everyone died

Lessay instead they had NO air, zero atmospheres of pressure, and it was less than 200 degrees below zero.

Oh! Also periodic bombardments of radiation.

Would the survivors be 50%, more than 50%, or less than 50%..?

How about after FIVE years..?

Yeah, I think we should go, but.....they reallllllly have their work cut out for them, lemme tell ya...

Your lawn appears to be burned out. I suspect your soil is acidic.

I recommend we lime your lawn and a strict watering regime.

Oh, and we should treat for grubs 5 times a year.

I estimate around $1200 a year for 5 treatments.
