Police are searching for a suspect in the death of a Tennessee driver killed on Tuesday when a large chunk of concrete came crashing through his windshield.
Joe Shelton Jr., 54, was driving to work early Tuesday morning when the large piece of concrete smashed through his Nissan sports car, hitting the man in the face and sending his vehicle swerving across a Nashville highway, according to police.
Shelton was an employee at a Nissan plant in Smyrna.
Investigators with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said the concrete was likely tossed from a bridge overlooking the highway, but theres no indication of who threw it, the police department said.
Police said the small vehicle sideswiped a pickup truck and a guardrail before it finally lost momentum.
"The concrete chunk traveled through Sheltons windshield and hit him in the face at approximately 4:54 a.m. as he was driving to work at the Nissan plant in Smyrna," the department said in a statement. "The Nissan then sideswiped a Toyota pickup truck and a guardrail before coming to final rest on I-24s Silliman Evans Bridge."

Inspectors with the Tennessee Department of Transportation determined that the concrete was not a part of the bridge structure, but more closely resembled a roadside curb, according to the statement.
The department is looking for local surveillance footage and investigating the origin of the concrete for potential clues.
Police are asking anyone who might know where the concrete chunk came from to call their Crime Stoppers line at 615-742-7463 with information.

And everyone knows that this can kill someone as well as they know that shooting bullets around can kill someone.
Murder in the First with special circumstances.
Death penalty.
That will stop this cold.
Do the same to parents who leave their kids to die in cars and watch that vanish as well.
When there are real major penalties attached to something people stop. Rather amazing.
What an idiotic statement.
When the sarcasm is that obvious it should not need a sarcasm tag. I guess some folks need it.

Likely just a dindu doin what dindus do (du?).
It wasn’t from the overpass. The bridge is very close to the projects, 50 yards.
Are people really finding chunks of concrete lying around, and deciding to carry them to overpasses?
Yes.
And sandbags.
Tombstones.
Ball bearings.
Wrenches.
And large rocks.

Now there's a big surprise /s
A lot of gangs require new recruits to do vile things of this nature, be it a random drive-by or dropping rocks onto passing vehicles, in order to prove themselves to the gang.
In fact, the article links to a related news story with the following headline: MORE: Ohio teens given suspended sentence for dropping sandbag off overpass that killed man)
Suspended sentence = no prison time and barely a slap on the wrist. Feral inner city "teens" are basically allowed to get away with first-degree murder today.
There are more than a few FReepers who seem to have studied long and hard in order to have attained an acceptable level of obtuseness.
Are they sure this was an act of vandalism? Not many punks out at five in the morning.
...
They are if they stay up all night.
I recall reading about a similar incident in San Diego back in 2001 or 2002. A man was driving on the freeway at 2 a.m. and someone threw a large rock (or maybe a piece of concrete) from an overpass--it went through the passenger side window and killed the driver's wife.
It’s not.
Many years ago, “youths” would toss rocks off the bridges on the interstates, occasionally causing mayhem, but thankfully, no deaths.
Ever since then, I habitually scan the bridges I’m about to pass under.
Just in case.
RIP.
17th was quoting the liberal line on how “misunderstood” youths do such “praks”, and therefore shouldn’t be punished extensively. 17th Miss Regt likely agrees with me - the perp should be arrested and prosecuted for Murder 1 - a premeditated act intended to cause extreme harm or death.
Fast. Sweet car. Sad for the man’s family and shame on the hoods that did it.
