We traveled there a bit later in the late 90's. The mood was a bit lighter I think, but much of the authoritarian mood and it's trappings remained.
One thing that really sticks out to me was the lack of personal choices. For instance, we stayed with a host family in Moscow. It was mid-September, and cold. Our hostess, who has since immigrated to the U.S., noticed that I was cold but said that the heat hadn't been turned on yet.
She didn't mean in her apartment, or in her building, but in the city itself. They didn't turn the heat on in the city until October. She told us that it was piped in like the water, and the closer you were to the source the hotter your building was.
Another thing - alcoholism was rampant. It may still be that way. Many children were in orphanages due to that fact, and many of them were afflicted with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
One of the cities we traveled to was Rybinsk, in the Yaroslav Region, between Moscow and St. Petersburg. A picture we took still breaks my heart when I look at it. There's an unpainted slat fence in front of an orphanage with children halfway visible on the other side, their hands gripping the slats and parts of their faces peaking through the fence.
I don't know if Trump will begin negotiation for the opening up of adoptions from Russia again. I remember that the moratorium on adoptions occurred some years back in retaliation for our punishment of human rights abuses in Russia. With all of the stuff we're finding out about the Obama administration I'm wondering if that was truly the case or if something else was going on.

Agreed! As you can tell from my previous commentary on Pastor Cruz, I am a huge fan. Every time he's in my area now I make it a point to be there. And I usually have a busy schedule.
One of my biggest soapbox spiels is that we need to revamp history and government classes in our public schools. Currently it's the norm that these classes are boring recitations of dates and events, often taught by coaches in smaller schools like ours. The teaching of history and government needs to be done by people who are passionate about the subject manner with a knack for story telling. Students need to learn causes and consequences of historical events. How it all ties together. Pastor Cruz is a master at this.
I'd be very happy if Pastor Cruz had a leadership position in transitioning our government and history classes into what they need to be. I'm certain that's not his calling in life but if we could duplicate his manner of teaching about our government and the history of its formation we'd have fewer stupid voters.
I come from a long family line of Texas high school coaches. You can imagine my popularity at family reunions when I start dogging the topic of getting coaches out of important classrooms. Frankly, I'd rather the coaches get their classroom time in English or science than history! (Said tongue-in-cheek, only half joking)
Wow. And they don’t even factor Hillary’s Server (serving up the finest in USDA prime state secrets). After reading that how can we now ever tell what CIA officers are double agents? Once the Trumpnami hits they gonna find they @sses reorganized. It’s the only solution. Dissolve and rebuild.
In the lore there was a story of them acquiring the remains of some type of craft in one of the Nordic countries, IIRC around 1936, and that it was a significant boost to them technologically in the areas of metallurgy and aerodynamics.
I’m not even into all that numerology and stuff but I had always vaguely wondered why the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of the eleventh month so I decided to look it up. Most of it was straight from the article but I’m the one that decided to calculate the number of days between swearings in my own little self so I’m claiming that crumb.
